Where England's U17 World Cup winners are now after Chelsea and Liverpool exits

mirror.co.uk, 28 October 2021, 07:00

England aren't known for winning football tournaments, with their last men's triumph coming more than 55 years ago at the 1966 World Cup.

So in 2017, it was a bit of a shock when the country's U20 and U17 sides both lifted the World Cup - giving the people some hope for the future.

The latter victory was a particularly memorable performance, recovering from 2-0 down to thrash Spain 5-2 in the final in Kolkata, India.

Four years later, several members of that squad have gone on to become Premier League regulars - with one costing his current employers a whopping £73million in July.

Here, Mirror Football takes a look at the 11 players that started the final under manager Steve Cooper - and some very special reserves.

Who is England's best young footballer? Let us know in the comments below

Curtis Anderson

England's goalkeeper for the final was Curtis Anderson, a Manchester City star that was making his way through the ranks at the Etihad.

Two years after the World Cup, he made the shock decision to join American minnows Charlotte Independence.

Anderson told reporters: "When I heard that Charlotte Independence were interested in signing me I quickly decided that this was too good an opportunity to miss out on.

"Especially the chance playing in senior football for the first time in my young career."

The move didn't quite work out for the youngster and he's since returned to England, signing for Wycombe in September 2020.

Anderson remains at Adams Park but recently signed a season-long loan deal at National League South side Eastbourne Borough.

Steven Sessegnon

The twin brother of Tottenham star Ryan is still at Fulham and has become an U21 international but is yet to establish himself at Craven Cottage.

Sessegnon did make 14 appearances during the 2019-20 campaign, however, helping Fulham achieve promotion to the Premier League.

The youngster spent the following campaign on loan at Championship side Bristol City but suffered a serious hamstring injury, making just 16 league appearances.

Sessegnon has plenty of talent and will be hoping to stay fit and break into the Fulham team later this season.

Marc Guehi

The ex-Chelsea centre-back has enjoyed a tremendous rise during the last 20 months for club and country.

He joined Swansea on loan in January 2020, going on to make 59 appearances in all competitions for the Welsh club during an 18-month spell.

Although Swansea lost last season's play-off final, Guehi earned himself an £18m move to Crystal Palace in July and featured in all nine Premier League games this term.

He's also recently been appointed captain of the U21s by manager Lee Carsley and a senior call-up can't be too far away.

Speaking after Guehi's appointment, Carsley said: "He is a player I've know for two or three years and straight away I was impressed with how mature he is, the way he talks about the game and influences the players off the pitch.

"The example he sets off the pitch as well as on it made it an easy choice."

Joel Latibeaudiere

Guehi's partner was a sensation at youth level, captaining Manchester City's U18 to the Premier League North title and the FA Youth Cup final.

He never made a first-team appearance under Pep Guardiola, however, and was allowed to leave the club after a season on loan at Dutch side Twente.

Latibeaudiere has since been snapped up by Swansea, signing a three-year contract with the Championship side in October 2020.

The talent has since become an important member of Russel Martin's squad and has expanded his game, recently playing at wing-back.

Latibeaudiere said: "I must give credit to the gaffer and his staff for the way we're playing because we really enjoy it."

Jonathan Panzo

Like many of England's U17 World Cup winners, Panzo decided to ditch one of the so-called "Big Six" 12 months after the final.

The defender left Chelsea to join Monaco, where he continued his football education in the glamorous French principality.

Panzo made just three senior appearances for Monaco and spent time at Belgium outfit Cercle Brugge before establishing himself at Dijon.

Unfortunately for the youngster, Dijon were relegated from Ligue 1 last term and he is currently nursing a knee injury.

George McEachran

Unlike Panzo, McEachran has remained at Stamford Bridge since the World Cup final and has had little playing time as a result.

The midfielder, who is the younger brother of MK Dons midfielder Josh, is yet to make his senior debut for Chelsea.

He did, however, earn himself a Europa League winners medal for sitting on the bench during their 4-1 final win against Arsenal in 2019.

McEachran made his professional debut as a regular in Chelsea's U23 EFL Trophy side, starting their goalless draw with Cheltenham on Tuesday evening.

He's also enjoyed time on loan at Dutch sides Cambuur and Maastricht and may be eager to earn himself an EFL move in the near future.

Tashan Oakley-Boothe

The midfielder was at Tottenham when England lifted the U17 title and remained in North London until January 2020.

He only made one senior appearance for Spurs in the League Cup before joining Stoke, where he's since flourished under Michael O'Neill.

Oakley-Boothe broke into the first team last term, making 16 Championship appearances before a back fracture ended his campaign in April.

He's since been recovering from that nasty injury but returned to the Stoke bench for Wednesday evening's League Cup defeat to Brentford.

Phil Foden

The Man City ace was the star of the show in Kolkata, scoring twice to pick up the Man of the Match award.

At the time, everyone thought he was going to be the next big thing - and Foden hasn't disappointed the English public.

He's gone on to become an integral part of Pep Guardiola's side, playing 50 games last term to help them win the Premier League and reach the Champions League final.

The midfielder is also an England regular, starting their first game at Euro 2020 and earning 11 senior caps to date.

Speaking about Foden after his two goals against Brighton on Saturday, Guardiola said: "In the final third he can play up front, has the quality to move and be aggressive one on one and arrive in the box.

"He can play as a false nine, a winger, wide right or wide left.

"He is a guy who is a midfield player with a big sense of the goal. He is still young and still has a margin to improve."

Morgan Gibbs-White

The midfielder was one of the few players in England's U17 squad that had first team experience at Wolves before the final.

Gibbs-White has since gone on to make 104 senior appearances, 46 of which in the Premier League, in a blistering start to his professional career.

The talent joined Sheffield United on a season-long loan in August and has continued to impressed in the Championship, scoring three goals in his first eight games.

Speaking about Gibbs-White in September, Blades skipper Billy Sharp said: "Morgan's come in and been instrumental. Scoring goals, creating goals.

"He really gets the crowd off their feet. He's brilliant to have in the team. He's always looking for the killer pass which is obviously brilliant for me."

Callum Hudson-Odoi

The Chelsea winger is another youngster who's gone on to make a wonderful start to his professional career.

Hudson-Odoi has already made 106 appearances for the Blues, winning the Champions League, Europa League and Super Cup.

He's also a three-cap senior international and has been previously linked with some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including Bayern Munich.

Speaking in February, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel said: "Callum's been fantastic for me and it's on him to show me that every game and every day in training."

Club skipper Cesar Azpilicueta added: "Callum is a strong boy, I'm sure he will get better and he is very important for us."

Rhian Brewster

Although he has a Champions League medal and the U17 Golden Boot in his locker, Brewster's professional career is yet to really begin.

Serious knee and ankle injuries restricted his progress at Liverpool and he ended up making just four senior appearances under Jurgen Klopp.

Brewster joined Sheffield United for a reported £23.5m in October 2020 and was expected to score plenty of goals for the Blades in the Premier League.

Twelve months and one relegation later, though, he's scored just one goal in 38 games - and that was against League Two outfit Carlisle United in the League Cup.

Brewster has proven himself at Championship level before, scoring 10 goals in 20 league games for Swansea during a loan spell, and will be hoping to find his form again soon.

Jadon Sancho

The winger's time at the World Cup was cut short when Borussia Dortmund recalled him, although that should say everything you need to know about Sancho.

Before the end of the 2017-18 season, the former Man City youngster had scored his first Bundesliga goal for one of the biggest clubs in Europe.

He went on to hit the back of the net 38 times and produce 51 assists in 104 Bundesliga games and, alongside Foden, is arguably the most successful member of the U17 squad.

Sancho's form saw him earn a £73m move to Manchester United in July and, although he's yet to score his first Premier League goal, has a bright future ahead.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp recently said: "Jadon Sancho is a world class talent, definitely.

"He has all the things you need to become really one of the best players in the world in the future."

The "Croydon De Bruyne" has become one of Arsenal's best players, despite spending most of the U17 World Cup on the bench.
