When was the last time Newcastle United won a trophy? Toon out to end pain

talksport.com, 11 March 2025, 15:32
Newcastle United's trophy drought is one of the most-talked-about stories in football.

The Toon are now backed by the richest owners in the world, but their lack of success has plagued them.

However, they get the chance to finally end years of pain on Sunday when they take on Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.

But tens of thousands of Newcastle supporters are set to descend on the capital with the hope they'll finally see their side win something.

They came close two years ago but were beaten 2-0 in this same cup final by Manchester United to prolong the drought.

When was the last time Newcastle United won a trophy?

The last major trophy that the Toon won was in 1969 when they lifted the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

This was a UEFA competition that started in 1955 and ran until 1971, and it is considered to be the predecessor to the Europa League.

During the 1968/69 season, Newcastle came up against Hungarian side Ujpest FC in the final.

This was the first time the Magpies had ever competed in European competition, and after a two-legged affair, they came out victorious 6-2 on aggregate after a 3-0 win and 3-2 victory.

However, for domestic honours, you have to go back to 1955 for the last time Newcastle won something.

The Magpies played Manchester City at the old Wembley and won 3-1.

Toon legend Jackie Milburn opened the scoring before Man City equalised, but second-half goals from Bobby Mitchell and George Hannah ensured the FA Cup returned to Tyneside.

But since then, Newcastle have won nothing, bar the Championship title twice.

Under Mike Ashley, the domestic cup competitions were publicly declared not a priority, meaning the hope of winning anything was slim, to say the least.

However, under the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, Eddie Howe has been encouraged to target silverware.

They came close in 2023 but will look to go one better this time.

If this group of players were to be the ones to lift a trophy, they would be celebrated forever on Tyneside, and Howe knows just how much silverware would mean.

Speaking after Newcastle secured Champions League football in 2023, Howe said: "I want success for this football club.

"We want to bring silverware here if we can."

And that hasn't changed, with Howe repeating that message earlier in the season.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of the quarter-final clash against Brentford, he said: "I made it very clear when I came to Newcastle what I wanted to achieve, and I know I speak on behalf of all the players and the coaching staff in that as well.
