West Ham have had a great January window, but there could still be surprises

talksport.com, 31 January 2024, 19:00
The transfer window slams shut on Thursday and it's going to be another manic day of deals.

Although this January has not reached the ludicrous spending seen 12 months ago, there has still been plenty of activity.

A record £815million was splashed out by Premier League clubs last year, so there was also going to be a downturn - especially with worries over staying within financial fair play rules.

Teams have been active with numerous loan deals and permanent transfers being completed already - and we all know what can happen on the madness that is deadline day, which we will have covered all day on talkSPORT.

Who better than Mr Deadline Day himself, Jim White, to take you through the notable deals so far and the teams to keep an eye on.

Timo Werner

Let's start with Timo Werner for Spurs.

Now, like the rest of you, when Werner left Chelsea I thought that was the last we would ever see of him in England and we'll see how he does over in the Bundesliga.

He's come back, and he's come back to Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou.

I think this will be a good deal for Ange and for Tottenham. I see Werner doing well, really well in his position at Tottenham.

Jadon Sancho

Well, what can you say about this?

This was a sad, sad story because Jadon Sancho, when he came here, everybody thought - myself included - he's going to do great things for Manchester United, he's going to give them this electric pace down the right and he's going to be a problem for any defence. Thumbs up to that.

It did not work out. He did not apologise to Erik ten Hag and he's back at Dortmund.

Good luck, I hope he does well but Jadon Sancho is what might have been.

Ben Brereton Diaz

Sheffield United need goals to dig themselves out of a hole. And Brereton Diaz might be the man to do that.

He plays his international football for Chile - can he do it at Sheffield United? You know, maybe he can.

Kalvin Phillips

I think of Kalvin Phillips and I think, 'Do you know what? He must be the luckiest guy in football'.

I met him when he was at Leeds United - Kalvin, you're a gem of a lad. And then you got your move to Manchester City.

For whatever reason, Pep Guardiola was reluctant to play you but you won everything there was to be won.

Now he's moved on and from off the field you now go on the field at West Ham United.

Show us what you can do because, Kalvin, there is a great player in there - let's see it in a Hammers strip.

I think this is great news for West Ham and David Moyes.

Eric Dier

We're now focusing a lot of our attention these days on the Bundesliga and Bayern Munich.

Why is that? Because of Harry Kane!

We thought at one stage another player was going to join Kane out there - Kieran Trippier from Newcastle, but that didn't happen.

This one did - Eric Dier joined Harry out at Bayern Munich.

I hope it works out for Eric Dier, I met him a couple of times and I met him when Tottenham played Fulham. I had a lovely chat with him.

He's a decent man and a more than decent player and I hope it works for Dier at Bayern Munich.

Ones to watch

Newcastle

Now, normally the January transfer window is a quiet one but this one, it's fair to say, has been a super quiet.

A lot of that has to do with FFP, those three initials that clubs have to watch. These days clubs have to watch the pennies more than ever.

Newcastle fall into that category so we will watch to see if some of the big names go in this window.

There was talk Alexander Isak may be one. There was talk that Joelinton - injured now until the end of the season - still might leave, and there was talk that even Bruno might go.

Maybe they will, but maybe not in January. Maybe in the summer.

Tottenham

I'm also keeping an eye on Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham.

I love the way that they play on the front foot and they will win more games than they lose - you score three, we'll score four.

So maybe Ange will do a bit more damage and a bit more business this window.
