The Avellaneda derby, which was won 1-0 by Racing Club on July 10, is usually a feisty affair - but nobody cod quite believe what they saw during this instalment of the rivalry.
Tackles weren't the only thing flying in at the Estadio Presidente Peron, as Fernandez would soon find out, when something chucked from the crowd struck him when he went to retrieve a ball near the away fans.
The forward went down clutching his face, before he was tended to by the club's medical team.
Fortunately, the 31-year-old was okay to play the rest of the game after the incident, which was completely out of line.
Fernandez is one of Independiente key men, having scored four goals and provided three assists in 25 games for them this season.
But he couldn't catch a break against Racing, as his side were on the wrong end of the derby defeat.
The only goal of the game came from experienced forward Gabriel Hauche who, despite defenders leaping like salmons in front of him, scored an incredible overhead kick in the first half.
Racing's season is going swimmingly, which continued with that 1-0 win, helping them climb to eighth-plaice in the Argentine top-flight, whilst arch rivals Independiente are floundering in 22nd.
I think it's safe to say that that is one of the cray-ziest things you'll ever see on a football pitch!
