Video shows Messi and Mbappe hugging as PSG teammates embrace after World Cup final

Argentina were victorious, beating France 4-2 on penalties to win their third crown, as Messi finally got his hands on the coveted trophy.

Messi finally got his hands on the one major honour missing from his glittering collection, but he and Argentina were put through the ultimate test after seeing a two-goal lead wiped out.

The former Barcelona star opened the scoring from the penalty spot, before Angel Di Maria fired home on 36 minutes after a brilliant ball from Brighton's Alexis Mac Allister to go 2-0 up and cruising.

However, France hit back through a Kylian Mbappe brace, as the drama unfolded after the half-time break.

The 23-year-old netted from the penalty spot on 80 minutes, and he then found the back of Emiliano Martinez's net with a fine first-time finish to force extra-time against the odds.

Messi netted in the first period of the extra-time, bundling the ball over the line, only for Mbappe to answer back by completing his hat-trick from the spot two minutes from the end of a frantic, chaotic added spell.

But it was Argentina who held their nerve as they reigned victorious in the penalty shoot-out - leaving Mbappe heartbroken as he watched his PSG teammate lift the golden trophy.

But there was a touching moment between the two superstars after the match and before the trophy lift.

Following the aftermath, in a video posted by FIFA, Messi can be seen hugging Mbappe, while Argentine head coach Lionel Scaloni can also be seen shaking the Frenchman's hand.

Mbappe, after his heroics in the final, won the golden boot.

The 23-year-old bagged eight goals in the tournament in seven matches, to become only the second player in history to score a hat-trick in the World Cup final after England's Geoff Hurst.

Mbappe joins the likes of Harry Kane, James Rodriguez, Miroslav Klose and Just Fontaine, the only other Frenchman, in the historic list of World Cup top scorers.

Having scored 12 goals in World Cup football now, just one behind Fontaine, it now looks likely that the PSG superstar will overtake Klose's all-time tournament total of 16 when the next one rolls around in 2026 - which will be joint-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
