A jax chief executive Edwin van der Sar has defended goalkeeper Andre Onana after the Cameroonian was sanctioned for 12 months after testing positive for a doping offence.
The legendary former goalkeeper also announced that both the player and the club would appeal the decision before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS).
" I am one hundred percent convinced that the positive doping test was the result of a misunderstanding," Van der Sar told Ajax's official channel.
"During the international break in November we received a message from UEFA saying that a prohibited substance had been detected in Andre's urine during an out-of-competition check at De Toekomst. That was a big shock for us and obviously the same for him.
"After hearing the news, we went with the club's doctor to the player's home to examine all the medication that was in the house. Onana told us that he'd taken a pill for a headache, but it turned out that he'd taken a pill of his partner. It looked quite similar in terms of name and packaging. It's bad luck."
What should work in Onana 's favour, according to Van der Sar, is the fact that the medication taken does not boost performance in any way.
