UFC legend offered shot at a boxing world title against champion Mikaela Mayer

Mayer, who was once a unified world champion, was confident she would not lose to Holm despite the latter once being a boxing champion herself.

Holm's last boxing bout was a win to defend the IBA and WBF super lightweight titles against Mary McGee in May 2013.

She had a record of 33-2-3 including nine knockouts.

But she then transferred over into MMA to seek a new challenge and eventually signed with the UFC in 2014.

Prior to agreeing a contract with UFC president Dana White Holm was on a seven bout winning streak, which was extended to 10 following her iconic win against Ronda Rousey in 2015.

Holm won in spectacular fashion hitting Rousey with a left cross which knocked her to the ground, followed by a high kick to the head when the champion got back up.

Unfortunately for Holm she was unable to defend her bantamweight belt, losing in her next fight via submission to Miesha Tate.

Holm had three more opportunities to regain the belt but lost every title match, most recently to fellow legend Amanda Nunes in 2019.

Mayer appeared on the podcast of previous UFC Champions Henry Cejudo and Kamaru Usman, Pound for Pound, and was asked to name her all-time top three women boxers.

She named Claressa Shields, Katie Taylor and herself.

Cejudo asked if Holm could become a boxing world champion nowadays and in response she said: "I haven't watched enough of her boxing fights.

"The one I've seen everywhere is the one where she got knocked out of the ring. But I know she's great and I have a lot of respect for her.

"If she came to my division? No she wouldn't be because she wouldn't beat me. She can come and try though; Mayer vs Holm!"

Despite being aged 43 Holm's last bout was 11 months ago.

She fought in April 2024 against Kayla Harrison but lost via submission in round two.

Holm parted ways with the UFC this year despite having two fights left on her deal.

"I know a lot of people have a lot of thoughts that I need to be retired and all that," said Holm.

"It's definitely closer, but I'm just not there yet. I know I still have a couple of fights left in me, and I want to see what doors open up.

"Maybe I go to boxing. I know there's a lot of talk with GFL, so I'm just leaving my options open."
