U.S. Women's National Team pays tribute to LGBTQ+ community in friendly vs. Colombia

On International LGBTQ+ Pride Day, the players of the U.S. Women's National Team paid tribute on their jerseys during the friendly match they played against Colombia.

On June 28, International LGBTQ+ Pride Day, the U.S. and Colombian teams faced each other at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.

As a tribute to the entire community, the players of the Stars and Stripes team wore their numbers with the colors of the rainbow flag, as a symbol of sexual diversity.

The U.S. team is led by Megan Rapinoe, who, with her number 15 on her back, was part of the team that took the field on Tuesday night.

Rapinoe, a tireless advocate for gender equality

Rapinoe is a tireless advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, which she does every day with more strength and which she takes advantage of thanks to the momentum that soccer gives her, as she has had the opportunity to reach more people.

The world champion with the U.S. national team publicly revealed in July 2012 that she was a lesbian, a situation that did not affect her career, even had a greater momentum and she knew how to take advantage of it to fight for social causes and support various organizations.

She fights against racism, discrimination and respect for people with different sexual preferences, and powerful companies in the world such as Nike or DJO Global joined to support her in her fight. She even had confrontations and criticized the former president of her country, Donald Trump.

The previous week she raised her voice after the ruling that ended the right to abortion was released, which she described as sad and cruel, and that it is something that will disproportionately affect the weakest social classes.

"You are allowing a violent blow to women's rights, our bodies and our souls," Rapinoe said.

Rapinoe, captain of the U.S. Women's National Team and one of the most respected voices in the fight for gender equality in her country, has continuously sought to have women on the national team earn the same as men.
