Tuesday's Champions League predictions including Lugano vs. Fenerbahce

sportsmole.co.uk, 23 July 2024, 05:00
Bodo/Glimt vs. RFS (Tuesday, 4.00pm)

Bodo/Glimt begin their Champions League campaign on Tuesday, as they kick off a second qualifying round tie against Rigas Futbola Skola at Aspmyra Stadion.

After easing through the first round, RFS now travel north of the Arctic Circle to Bodo, where their hosts have staged several major upsets over the past few years.

We say: Bodo/Glimt 2-1 Rigas Futbola Skola

Bodo are particularly hard to beat on home turf, but RFS have scored in their last 11 games across all competitions and will seek to test their hosts' defence: a slim win for the Norwegian champions should leave this tie in the balance ahead of next week's decider in Riga.

Panevezys vs. Jagiellonia (Tuesday, 4.30pm)

Panevezys are set to host Jagiellonia Bialystok at the Aukstaitijos stadionas on Tuesday in the first game of their two-legged showdown in the Champions League second qualifying round.

The hosts are set to make their debut in this stage of the competition after a 4-1 aggregate victory in the first qualifying round, while the visitors were given an automatic pass into the second round and are gearing up for their first match in this season's tournament.

We say: Panevezys 1-2 Jagiellonia Bialystok

The hosts may have managed a shock victory in the first qualifying round, but they come into this game having returned to defeat last time out, their third successive loss in the league.

The visitors, on the other hand, returned to their domestic league with a commanding victory, and we expect them to secure the first-leg lead here.

Lincoln vs. Qarabag (Tuesday, 5.00pm)

In the first leg of the Champions League's second qualifying round, Lincoln Red Imps are set to host Qarabag FK at Victoria Stadium on Tuesday.

The home side finished first in their championship playoff group with 65 points in Gibraltar's top flight, while the visitors won Azerbaijan's Misli Premier League with 83 points.

We say: Lincoln Red Imps 1-3 Qarabag FK

Although Lincoln have been strong in their domestic league, it is difficult to ignore Qarabag's superior record in European competitions.

Additionally, while the hosts did progress from the first qualifying round, they found it difficult, and Tuesday's clash could be even more challenging given the calibre of opposition.

APOEL vs. Petrocub (Tuesday, 6.00pm)

APOEL make their return to the Champions League on Tuesday when they host Petrocub Hincesti at the Neo GSP in the first leg of their second qualifying round matchup.

The hosts will make their first appearance in this competition since a playoff round loss in 2019-20, while the visitors are hoping to extend their inaugural campaign in Europe's premier tournament.

We say: APOEL 1-0 Petrocub Hincesti

Petrocub may be coming into this game on the back of a fantastic unbeaten run across all competitions, while they have also kept clean sheets in each of their last two matches, but we believe the hosts will prove too strong for them in this one and secure a narrow first-leg lead.

Malmo vs. KI (Tuesday, 6.00pm)

In the first leg of the second Champions League qualifying round, Malmo are set to host KI Klaksvik at Eleda Stadion on Tuesday.

The home side are currently first in Sweden's Allsvenskan with 38 points from 16 games, while the visitors are third in the Faroe Islands' Premier League with 36 points from 16 games.

We say: Malmo 2-0 KI Klaksvik

Considering Klaksvik are not performing quite as well as they did during their title-winning campaign last season, they come into Tuesday's clash as underdogs.

Additionally, Malmo's current points trajectory could see them achieve a historic domestic season, and they will be confident of carrying this form into European competition.

FCSB vs. M. Tel Aviv (Tuesday, 6.30pm)

Having swept through the first round, FCSB continue their Champions League qualifying campaign on Tuesday, when they welcome Maccabi Tel Aviv to Arena Nationala in Bucharest.

The sides will battle it out in a two-legged second-round contest, with the first game hosted by the reigning Romanian champions.

We say: FCSB 2-0 Maccabi Tel Aviv

Though FCSB posted two disappointing draws to start the SuperLiga season, they can make the most of home advantage and take a firm grip on this tie by winning in Bucharest.

Maccabi Tel-Aviv particularly need a good result on Tuesday, with the second leg to be held in neutral Hungary next week, but they have had fewer competitive matches to prepare.

Ferencvaros vs. New Saints (Tuesday, 7.00pm)

Ferencvaros commence their latest Champions League campaign on Tuesday evening, as they host The New Saints in the first leg of their second qualifying round tie at Groupama Arena.

While TNS travel to Budapest on the back of beating Montenegrin minnows Decic, the Hungarian champions now enter the hunt for a precious place in this year's group stage.

We say: Ferencvaros 4-1 The New Saints

Although The New Saints have a few more run-outs under their belts, Ferencvaros should be able to shake off any rust in time to ensure a commanding lead ahead of next week's second leg.

With home advantage and a squad full of experienced pros at continental level, Fradi are set to all but book their place in the third qualifying round.

UE Santa Coloma vs. Midtjylland (Tuesday, 7.00pm)

In the first leg of the second Champions League qualifying round, UE Santa Coloma are set to host FC Midtjylland at Estadi Nacional on Tuesday.

The home side won the Andorran top flight with 66 points from 27 games, while the visitors currently have one point in Denmark's premier division after one matchweek.

We say: UE Santa Coloma 1-2 FC Midtjylland

Considering the difficulties that Santa Coloma encountered in their first-round tie against Ballkani, they could once again struggle on Tuesday.

Having said that, Midtjylland will have to contend with several absentees and that could make for a close encounter.

Dynamo Kiev vs. Partizan (Tuesday, 7.00pm)

Dynamo Kiev are set to face up against Partizan at the NSK Olimpijs'kyj on Tuesday in the first leg of their second-round qualifying matchup in the Champions League.

Both teams finished second in their respective league table last season, meaning they automatically qualified for the second qualifying round as they take part in the league path.

We say: Dynamo Kiev 1-0 Partizan

While we expect this to be a tough game with both sides looking to stay in the tie ahead of the second leg, we do believe that Dynamo Kiev will make the most of their home advantage and come away with a narrow lead.

Lugano vs. Fenerbahce (Tuesday, 7.30pm)

Kicking off their first Champions League campaign under new boss Jose Mourinho, Turkish giants Fenerbahce visit Lugano on Tuesday for a second qualifying round clash at Stockhorn Arena.

The two teams finished runners-up in their domestic leagues last season, and both are intent on making it all the way to this term's new-look group stage.

We say: Lugano 1-3 Fenerbahce

Under the management of a proven winner in Europe, Fener are likely to take a first-leg lead back to Istanbul: Lugano's defensive record was not impressive last season, when they also made a tame exit from the Conference League.

Shamrock vs. Sparta Prague (Tuesday, 8.00pm)

In the first leg of the second Champions League qualifying round, Shamrock Rovers are set to host Sparta Prague at the Tallaght Stadium on Tuesday.

The home side are currently fourth in the League of Ireland with 34 points after 23 games, while the visitors have three points in Czech Republic's top flight after one matchweek.

We say: Shamrock Rovers 1-3 Sparta Prague

Shamrock Rovers struggled to hold onto the lead against Vikingur, and if they repeat their second leg performance in this round, then they will no doubt struggle once again.

Additionally, considering the Irish champions have performed relatively poorly in their domestic league this season, Sparta Prague could take advantage in Europe on Tuesday.
