Tottenham without fit centre-back against Wolves as Pereira eyes club historye

talksport.com, 29 December 2024, 11:24
Tottenham will look to put an end to their dismal form this afternoon when they face Wolves, live on talkSPORT 2.

Spurs have lost their last two games and four of their last five, with the pressure building on Ange Postecoglou.

Their form has them 12th in the Premier League and struggling, and things need to turn around quickly.

They will hope that some positivity can return in front of their fans on Sunday as they host relegation-threatened Wolves.

However, new manager Vitor Pereira has the West Midlands outfit loving life, winning his first two games in charge.

Pereira can make history if he tastes victory again, aiming to become the first-ever Wolves boss to win his first three top-flight matches.

Tottenham vs Wolves: Predicted line-ups

Tottenham may be without a fit senior centre-back this weekend.

Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have both been sidelined in recent weeks, leaving Spurs with a makeshift defence.

And now even the back-up centre-backs are injured, with Ben Davies suffering a setback and Radu Dragusin picking up a knock.

It means Archie Gray is going to remain out-of-position in the back four, while Yves Bissouma may have to cover if youngster Alfie Dorrington isn't trusted.

Bissouma would replace Dragusin as he was substituted against Nottingham Forest, so he must be seen as an option.

Pedro Porro is likely to return at right-back with Djed Spence suspended, while Destiny Udogie should be on the left again.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Pape Matar Sarr will be in midfield behind a returning James Maddison who was benched last time out.

Maddison coming back would see Brennan Johnson drop out, with Heung-min Son and Dejan Kulusevski keeping their place.

Dominic Solanke will lead the line as Richarlison is still injured.

As for Wolves, Matheus Cunha seems to be still available to feature despite being charged by the FA.

Since Cunha was punished for misconduct, he's scored important goals against Leicester and Man United.

And he's expected to be playing again as the FA have provided no update on whether he will be banned or not yet.

The Brazilian will continue in behind Jorgen Strand Larsen and next to the rejuvenated Goncalo Guedes.

In midfield, Andre and Joao Gomes have a good partnership while Nelson Semedo and Rayan Ait-Nouri will be at wing-back.

The back four will pick themselves after back-to-back clean sheets under new manager Pereira.

Jose Sa will be in goal, with Matt Doherty, Santiago Bueno and Toti Gomes forming a strong trio in front of him.

Tottenham have lost each of their last three Premier League meetings with Wolves, their longest-ever losing run against them in their league history.

Wolves have won four of their last five league games against Spurs (L1), as many as they had in their previous 19 against them combined (D3 L12).

Tottenham have only lost their final league game in one of the last 15 calendar years (W8 D6), though that was a 3-1 home defeat against Wolves in 2018.

Tottenham vs Wolves: What has been said?

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O'Hara has called for Spurs to steal another Premier League manager to replace Postecoglou.

O'Hara believes the Australian's job is at risk as the pressure continues to grow on him as his side's poor form continues.

Speaking after a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest last time out, the talkSPORT host told the Sports Bar: "We've actually fallen apart.

"I get we've had problems but you can't keep losing games. It's happening every week.

"I'm starting to come around to the fact that we should nick Fulham's manager Marco Silva. He's good.

"They are organised, have a structure. They haven't got world-beaters, but they have good players.

"All I'm saying is I don't know if Big Ange can carry on. You can't lose nine out of 18 games and be the Tottenham manager and get away with it. It can't continue."

No team have lost more Premier League games since the start of December than Tottenham (4). It's their most league defeats in a calendar month since December 2003 (also 4), while they last lost five league games in a single month in October 1955.

Dominic Solanke has been involved in seven goals in his last six home games in all competitions for Tottenham, scoring six and assisting one. He's looking to score in four consecutive home appearances for the first time since October 2021 (6 with Bournemouth).

Matheus Cunha has been involved in 11 goals in his last 10 Premier League games, scoring seven and assisting four. Overall he's had a hand in 22 goals in 2024 (16 goals, 6 assists), the second most by a Wolves player in a single calendar year in the Premier League after Raúl Jiménez (24 in 2019).
