Tottenham urged to let "disrespectful" Kane leave after Man City transfer saga

Sir Geoff Hurst insists Tottenham Hotspur should sell Harry Kane after making a mistake in keeping the wantaway striker at the club this summer.

The England captain appeared desperate to depart north London for Premier League champions Manchester City during the most recent transfer window but was denied a move by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.

Despite pledging his immediate future to Tottenham towards the end of the summer after hopes of a move away were dashed, Kane has looked out-of-sorts at the start of this season, firing blanks in the Premier League.

Although he has registered six goals across the Europa Conference League and EFL Cup, the Spurs striker has failed to find the net in any of his six Premier league appearances.

Much has already been made of Kane's underwhelming start to the campaign and now legendary England and West Ham United striker Sir Geoff Hurst has admitted Spurs should sell the wantaway frontman.

"To be honest with you, I get on with the Spurs players, we were great pals years ago. The thing I would say about the Spurs situation quite clearly - they should let Harry Kane go," the 1966 World Cup winner told talkSPORT.

"Keeping a player who wants to move on, and maybe deserves an opportunity playing in the Champions League, keeping him there with resistance is not necessarily good for the player and not necessarily good for the club.

"I think they should move him on, personally.

"Let's get this right, I'm not being detrimental about to Spurs or the club. They are a fantastic club and I'm great pals with the players from years ago.

"I never go along with this Spurs-West Ham antagonistic attitude. I never went along with that. I'm saying it purely as an outsider looking at the player and the club.

"The club is great. They have a great ground. He's a fantastic player but I think the time is to move on and progress. It's my humble opinion about this situation."

Kane's handling of the transfer saga had been called into question over the summer as he returned late from holiday for Tottenham's pre-season training as Manchester City saw a £100m bid rejected.

1966 World Cup winner Sir Geoff Hurst believes Tottenham should offload misfiring Kane

While it was widely reported that the 28-year-old believed Spurs went back on a "gentleman's agreement" to allow him to leave, Kane insisted he did nothing wrong and had not tarnished his reputation.

However, former Tottenham defender Ramon Vega, who lifted the League Cup with Spurs in 1999, has slammed Kane for his actions, labelling him "disrespectful".

"There is no doubt whatsoever about disrespecting the club, especially the fans, but also himself in terms of how he handled that situation, as a captain of England to start with, as he represents the country," Vega told talkSPORT.

"There is doubt, if a player in the dressing room wants to leave it's a very awkward kind of situation because the other players think, 'is he staying or not, or does he even care about staying?'."
