Tottenham target Fonseca is attack-minded but 'lacks composure under pressure'

However, Spurs fans have been warned that the Portuguese lacks composure when the pressure is really on.

Spurs' search for a new manager appears to be coming to an end with multiple reports suggesting Fonseca will succeed Jose Mourinho.

It's understood he's highly rated by incoming sporting director Fabio Paratici and is in talks to sign a three-year deal with the north London club.

Fonseca hasn't been out of work for long having only left Roma last month and despite being only 45 he boasts a large CV.

He's managed the likes of Porto, Braga and Shakhtar Donetsk. The Ukrainian club is where he's had his main success having guided them to league and cup doubles three years running.

Roma made a strong start to the 2020/21 season but missed out on both the Champions League and Europa League following a bad run of form.

And European football expert Andy Brassell believes that could be a problem as he told Spurs fans what to expect from Fonseca if he is hired.

"He's a really good coach, there's no doubt about that. He's got a strong philosophy and likes to play attacking football," Brassell told talkSPORT.

"The sort of background he's from, I think a lot of Premier League players will be able to connect with well and I think the fact that he normally goes for three at the back means it might benefit some of the players that Spurs have got.

"He did a really good job at Shakhtar, bearing in mind that they weren't champions, were homeless and still are, but he took them to three successive doubles which is a pretty astonishing achievement especially with the decline in budget.

"The issue with Roma last season is that it got so much worse as it went on. There was quite a promising start… they really should have made the Champions League.

"I think there's an issue with him. He's got great ideas, he's got a strong personality but I feel when he's under pressure he's not really that composed. That's a huge issue."
