'Time to go' - O'Hara calls for Postecoglou to be sacked after FA Cup exit

talksport.com, 9 February 2025, 20:45
Jamie O'Hara believes Ange Postecoglou's time at Tottenham has run its course.

Spurs' hopes of ending their 17-year trophy hoodoo suffered a blow as Postecoglou's side were dumped out of the FA Cup with a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in their fourth round tie at Villa Park.

The visitors couldn't have got off to a worse start as Jacob Ramsey put the hosts in front inside the first 60 seconds.

There was a slice of good fortune in the goal for Villa given Ramsey's shot was straight at goalkeeper Antonin Kinsy, but he couldn't deal with the pace of the strike.

Morgan Rogers doubled the hosts' advantage midway through the second half, prodding into the roof of the net from close range.

Mathys Tel sparked hope of a late comeback when he scored his first goal for his new club in the first minute of stoppage time, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation as Villa held firm.

The result means Postecoglou has just one chance left to back up his claim he always wins things in his second year at clubs.

Now out of the Carabap Cup and the FA Cup as well as the Premier League title being well out of reach, the Europa League is the only thing left for Tottenham to win this season.

But O'Hara does not feel Postecoglou should get the chance to see it through, as the former Tottenham midfielder blasted the side's limp performance against Villa.

"It's time to go now, Ange is out of his depth. [Unai] Emery is on a different planet compared to him and his players bopped us off the park. Should have been five, we're like reserve team playing in academy games that don't matter, it's crazy," O'Hara wrote on X.

Villa legend Gabriel Agbonlahor was unafraid to stick the boot in either and questioned Postecoglou's tactics.

"You've become the laughing stock of the Premier League, especially when Ange Postecoglou said those words, 'I always win something in my second season,'" Agbonlahor said.

Match Stats

"You just knew the pressure was on.

"Tonight, Villa had 16 shots, Jacob Ramsey could have taken two match balls home. The chances we missed... it was easy.

"Where are the tactics?"

Although O'Hara and Agbonlahor were all too happy to point the finger at Postecoglou, Tottenham fan and talkSPORT host Majestic feels the issues at the club ran far deeper than the Australian.

"Spurs have regressed that badly we are 14th in the Premier League, out of the Carabao Cup, out of the FA Cup," Majestic said.

"This is bigger than Ange Postecoglou. It isn't fair on Ange that it all lies on him, it's bigger. We shouldn't be in this situation.

"I said five years ago when we sacked Pochettino that we'd be in a relegation fight in the next five to ten years because it's all reactionary.

"It's a disgrace. Our fans tonight were superb. Our fans deserve better than this. They keep calling for what they want, that's the chairman to leave the football club.

"I've always said Daniel Levy has done wonders for Tottenham Hotspur as a facility and for the infrastructure.

"You've done your best and reached your peak. What you do, doesn't work anymore. I'm fuming."

One silver lining, if any, is that Tottenham's FA Cup exit reduces the number of midweek games Postecoglou's side will be involved in.

It could prove significant in affording the players on the club's ever-growing injury list more time to recover.

But Postecoglou will not be looking at the situation like that, now that another chance for a trophy is gone.

Tottenham will hope for a return to form and some more players back when they host Manchester United in their next fixture on February 16.
