This weekend's permutations: Who can be crowned champions, win promotion or suffer relegation?

sportsmole.co.uk, 15 May 2024, 06:29
Domestic leagues across Europe have now entered the business end of the season, with battles at the top and bottom of standings now close to reaching their conclusions.

While some titles and relegation scraps have already been decided, others are going down to the wire in thrilling fashion.

A number of leagues will celebrate the final day of the season this weekend, but before that there is some midweek business to take care of, including full schedules in La Liga and the Scottish Premiership.

Celtic could be crowned champions of the latter again, while the third and final relegation place could be filled in La Liga before the weekend arrives.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up all of the permutations from around Europe's top leagues for this week, and outlines exactly what each club needs to do to fulfill those possibilities.

What could be decided across Europe this week?

PREMIER LEAGUE PERMUTATIONS

What do Man City, Arsenal need to do to win the Premier League title?

Manchester City will be crowned champions for an unprecedented fourth season in a row if they beat West Ham United on Sunday. Failing that, they would clinch the title as long as they at least match Arsenal's result.

Arsenal would win the Premier League title for the first time in 20 years on the final day if they beat Everton and Man City fail to win.

KEY FIXTURES

Arsenal vs. Everton (Sunday, May 19 | 4pm)

Manchester City vs. West Ham United (Sunday, May 19 | 4pm)

When could Luton Town be relegated?

Luton will be relegated if they fail to beat Fulham at home on the final day of the season. Only a win, coupled with a Nottingham Forest defeat and a 12-goal swing, would be enough to keep them up on the final day.

Nottingham Forest can only be relegated if they lose against Burnley and Luton beat Fulham with a 12-goal swing between the two matches.

KEY FIXTURES

Burnley vs. Nottingham Forest (Sunday, May 19 | 4pm)

Luton Town vs. Fulham (Sunday, May 19 | 4pm)

LA LIGA PERMUTATIONS

When could Cadiz be relegated?

Cadiz will be relegated this week if they lose to Sevilla, Celta Vigo beat Athletic Bilbao and Rayo Vallecano avoid defeat.

KEY FIXTURES

Rayo Vallecano vs. Granada (Wednesday, May 15 | 6.30pm)

Sevilla vs. Cadiz (Wednesday, May 15 | 6.30pm)

Celta Vigo vs. Athletic Bilbao (Wednesday, May 15 | 9pm)

SCOTTISH PREMIERSHIP PERMUTATIONS

When could Celtic be crowned champions?

Celtic will be crowned champions for the 54th time if they avoid defeat at Kilmarnock on Wednesday.

KEY FIXTURES

Kilmarnock vs. Celtic (Wednesday, May 15 | 7.30pm)

SERIE A PERMUTATIONS

Who could be relegated from Serie A this weekend?

Sassuolo will be relegated if they lose to fellow relegation rivals Cagliari on Sunday. A draw would also see them relegated if Frosinone then avoid defeat at Monza later in the day.

Empoli could also be relegated this weekend if they lose to Udinese in another huge six-pointer, Frosinone and Cagliari both win, and Hellas Verona avoid defeat.

KEY FIXTURES

Sassuolo vs. Cagliari (Sunday, May 19 | 11.30am)

Monza vs. Frosinone (Sunday, May 19 | 2pm)

Udinese vs. Empoli (Sunday, May 19 | 2pm)

Salernitana vs. Hellas Verona (Monday, May 20 | 5.30pm)

BUNDESLIGA PERMUTATIONS

Who could be relegated from Bundesliga this weekend?

Koln kept their slim hopes alive with a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Union Berlin last weekend, but they will be relegated if they fail to beat Heidenheim, or if Union Berlin avoid defeat to Freiburg. The only way for Koln to stay up is to win and hope Union Berlin lose with a four-goal swing; if Koln score five goals themselves, then a three-goal swing could suffice.

Union Berlin will avoid automatic relegation with at least point, or if Koln fail to win. It would require a Union Berlin defeat, Koln win and a four-goal swing in goal difference - or a three-goal swing if Koln score five times - for the capital outfit to go down.

There is a slim possibility that Koln and Union could finish on the same points, goal difference and goals scored, in which case Koln would suffer automatic relegation due to their inferior head-to-head record.

KEY FIXTURES

Heidenheim vs. Koln (Saturday, May 18 | 2.30pm)

Union Berlin vs. Freiburg (Saturday, May 18 | 2.30pm)

LIGUE 1 PERMUTATIONS

Who could be relegated from Ligue 1 this weekend?

Lorient will be relegated if they fail to beat rock-bottom Clermont, or if Metz avoid defeat to champions Paris Saint-Germain. If Lorient win and Metz lose, Lorient would need a seven-goal swing in their favour to survive.

Metz could be automatically relegated if they lose, Lorient win and there is an 11-goal swing between the two games.

KEY FIXTURES

Lorient vs. Clermont (Sunday, May 19 | 8pm)

Metz vs. Paris Saint-Germain (Sunday, May 19 | 8pm)

TURKISH SUPER LIG PERMUTATIONS

When could Galatasaray be crowned champions?

Galatasaray have the mouth-watering prospect of winning the title against their greatest rivals and closest challengers Fenerbahce on Sunday. Gala only need to avoid defeat to not only win the highest-quality Turkish Super Lig title race in history, but also to become the first Turkish club to reach 100 points in a season.

KEY FIXTURE

Galatasaray vs. Fenerbahce (Sunday, May 19 | 5pm)

Who could be relegated from the Turkish Super Lig this weekend?

Pendikspor will be relegated if they lose to relegation rivals Ankaragucu on Saturday. They would also be relegated if they draw, either Gaziantep or Fatih Karagumruk win against the other, and Hatayspor beat Besiktas.

Hatayspor will be relegated if they lose, Gaziantep and Ankaragucu both win and Konyaspor avoid defeat.

Fatih Karagumruk will be relegated if they lose to Gaziantep and both Ankaragucu and Konyaspor avoid defeat.

KEY FIXTURES

Ankaragucu vs. Pendikspor (Saturday, May 18 | 5pm)

Besiktas vs. Hatayspor (Saturday, May 18 | 5pm)

Gaziantep vs. Fatih Karagumruk (Saturday, May 18 | 5pm)

Kayserispor vs. Konyaspor (Saturday, May 18 | 5pm)
