The records, benchmarks and milestones which could be broken in 2022/23

bundesliga.com, 19 June 2022, 16:10
The 2022/23 season is on the horizon and it promises to be yet another record-breaking year of Bundesliga football, with numerous landmarks and milestones looming.

bundesliga.com has cast an eye over some potentially momentous moments, starting with an obvious one: Bayern Munich could expand their title-winning sequence to 11 consecutive years.

If they do so then Thomas Müller, who recently extended his contract with the record champions until 2024, would earn a record-setting 12th Bundesliga title.

The Bavarians can start extending records as early as Matchday 1, when they look to make it 81 consecutive games in which they have scored at least one goal, and a 51st straight away fixture in which they have found the back of the net. They could also break one in a negative sense, though, since no defending champion has ever lost an official opening game, boasting a record of 15 wins and five draws and an aggregate score of 57-17.

Just like last season, a host of clubs enter the running with a new coach, with Edin Terzic (Borussia Dortmund), Andre Breitenreiter (Hoffenheim), Daniel Farke (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Niko Kovac (Wolfsburg), Enrico Maaßen (Augsburg), Sandro Schwarz (Hertha Berlin) and Frank Kramer (Schalke) looking to hit the ground running on Matchday 1. Might one of them be able to match - or better - Otto Rehhagel's 1995/96 record of seven straight wins as new Bayern coach?

Pep Guardiola may not have done so during his time at the Allianz Arena, but he does hold the record of going his first 28 Bundesliga games unbeaten. If any of the seven aforementioned new tacticians can equal that, they would be well on their way to setting another record: becoming the first debutant to win the title in their first season at a new club.

On the field, several players are hunting down records. Dortmund's Marco Reus, for example, could score his 150th Bundesliga goal (he's currently on 144), and Müller is also just 13 goals shy of that landmark - something the German attacking midfielder could conceivably achieve. Meanwhile, Max Kruse (97), Nils Petersen (88), Andrej Kramaric (88) and Anthony Modeste (83) could all be eyeing up their 100th Bundesliga goals in the coming campaign.

Bundesliga appearance number 400 could also be on the cards for Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann (393) or Dortmund defender Mats Hummels (387), while Bayern custodian Manuel Neuer could even reach the 500 mark - to do that, he would have to play all 34 league games this season to bring up a fifth century on the final day of the season.

Furthermore, there are numerous other team landmarks which could or should be reached over the course of 2022/23…

Hoffenheim will play their 500th Bundesliga game; they are currently on 476.

Freiburg have scored 960 goals in their Bundesliga history, with their 1000th on the horizon.

Hertha's next point at the Olympiastadion will be their 1000th on home soil in the Bundesliga.

Bochum could bring up 1000 goals at home in the Bundesliga - they are currently on 983.

Borussia Mönchengladbach are on the brink of their 500th home win - they are currently on 492.

Augsburg (44) and Leipzig (48) are looking for their 50th away wins.

If Wolfsburg can pick up at least 26 points on their travels, they would reach the 500-points mark.

Union Berlin are just ten wins away from their 50th in Germany's top flight, while if the past two seasons are anything to go by, they should score their 100th goal at home - they are currently on 81.

Whatever does happen, another record-breaking Bundesliga season is in store, and it all gets underway on Friday, 5 August, when defending champions Bayern travel to UEFA Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt.
