Sunday's Nations League predictions including Finland vs. England

sportsmole.co.uk, 13 October 2024, 05:00
Kazakhstan vs. Slovenia (Sunday, 2.00pm)

Both well beaten in midweek, Kazakhstan and Slovenia will aim to bounce straight back when they meet in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday.

The threat of relegation looms large at the halfway stage, as the pair now trail Norway and Austria in the League B Group 3 standings.

We say: Kazakhstan 0-1 Slovenia

After a miserable showing in midweek, Kazakhstan do not look like causing Slovenia many problems in the final third, with most of their main forwards short of playing time at club level.

The visitors are still hoping for a top-two finish, and they can stay in contention by edging out their hosts in Pavlodar.

Finland vs. England (Sunday, 5.00pm)

After a chastening defeat at the hands of the Greeks, Lee Carsley's England are under enormous pressure to respond on Sunday, when they head to Helsinki to pit their wits against Finland in the UEFA Nations League.

The Three Lions were stunned by the 2004 European champions in a 2-1 loss on Thursday evening, while their hosts were beaten by the same scoreline against the Republic of Ireland and remain without a single point in the section.

We say: Finland 0-2 England

As pitiful as England were against Greece, they now square up to a Finland side who pack much less of a punch in attack and have been permeable in defence for some time now.

Whether Carsley actually starts with a recognised number nine or not, a slightly rejigged Three Lions side should convincingly respond to Thursday's shock loss and extinguish Finland's already-slim hopes of a top-two finish.

Armenia vs. N. Macedonia (Sunday, 5.00pm)

Leading the race for automatic promotion from League C Group 4, second-placed Armenia and unbeaten leaders North Macedonia will meet in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday.

The hosts return to Yerevan having salvaged a point from Thursday's trip to the Faroe Islands, while their visitors cruised to victory over Latvia.

We say: Armenia 1-2 North Macedonia

Armenia have won just two of their last 13 matches and struggled to take a single point in the Faroe Islands, so North Macedonia can claim maximum points once again.

Doing the double over their hosts would put the Lions in total control of Group 4 with two games remaining, leaving promotion to League B within their grasp.

Liechtenstein vs. Gibraltar (Sunday, 5.00pm)

Liechtenstein welcome Gibraltar to Vaduz in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday fresh off the back of ending a 41-game winless run in all competitions last week.

The change in format means one team is guaranteed to be promoted from this group, with second place going into a playoff to try to win promotion from the bottom tier, making this a hugely important fixture for both.

We say: Liechtenstein 0-0 Gibraltar

After ending their lengthy winless streak last week, Liechtenstein have recovered from the humiliation they suffered last month against San Marino, and will feel confident again given Gibraltar's current away record.

The visitor's last away win ironically came at this venue in Vaduz though back in 2020 - 21 games ago - but that run could well go on unless they can end their current eight-game goalless run on the road.

Malta vs. Moldova (Sunday, 5.00pm)

Engaged in a battle for automatic promotion from League D Group 2, Malta and Moldova will clash in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday.

After the visitors won September's reverse fixture before beating Andorra earlier this week, Malta trail by three points in the standings - and they are without a permanent manager.

We say: Malta 1-2 Moldova

Now a big fish in a small pond at League D level, Moldova can do the double over managerless Malta and earn automatic promotion in the process.

The visitors are on a three-match winning streak and can use that momentum to get them over the line in Ta' Qali.

Greece vs. Rep. Ireland (Sunday, 7.45pm)

Fresh from an extremely emotionally-charged victory over England, Greece return home on Sunday, when they take on the Republic of Ireland in their next UEFA Nations League showdown.

The Pirate Ship upset the odds to come away from Wembley with a 2-1 win on Thursday evening, while the Boys in Green were also successful on their travels, sinking Finland by the same scoreline in League B Group 2.

We say: Greece 2-0 Republic of Ireland

With all due respect to Finland, the Scandinavian side have been leaky at the back for a good 12 months now, and a Greece outfit in Piraeus are a much different kettle of fish for the Boys in Green.

As a result, we can only envisage Jovanovic's men making it four for four as they edge ever closer to a coveted spot in the top tier of the Nations League.

Austria vs. Norway (Sunday, 7.45pm)

The top two in League B Group 3 convene on Sunday evening, as second-placed Austria host leaders Norway in the UEFA Nations League.

The Norwegians will arrive in Linz fresh from continuing their unbeaten start, largely thanks to new all-time top goalscorer Erling Haaland; meanwhile, their hosts smashed four past Kazakhstan.

We say: Austria 2-2 Norway

It was a close contest when these sides met in September, with Norway just snatching victory thanks to an 80th-minute winner.

Given home advantage on this occasion, Ralf Rangnick's hard-running Austria side should at least emerge with a draw, keeping them in the mix for a top-two finish next month.

Faroe Islands vs. Latvia (Sunday, 7.45pm)

Latvia make the trip across Northern Europe to Torshavn to face the Faroe Islands in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday night in a meeting between two countries separated in the FIFA World Rankings by just three places.

As the two weakest nations in Group C4, this result is likely to have huge implications about who is relegated from the section.

We say: Faroe Islands 1-0 Latvia

Knowing that a draw or worse will most likely condemn them to relegation, the Faroes will be well aware of the importance of this one, and their good recent home form suggests they are capable of finding a first win of the campaign.

Latvia have already beaten the hosts in this section, but have been well off it in their other two games, especially on Thursday, and they could well be narrowly edged out here.
