Stats reveal absurd time Haaland could break all-time Premier League record

talksport.com, 17 January 2025, 14:38
Goal machine Erling Haaland is on track to beat Alan Shearer's all-time Premier League goals record in the 2029/30 season.

That's according to statistical analysis from our friends at Opta.

Haaland has signed an extraordinary nine-and-a-half-year contract, committing his future to City until 2034.

The 24-year-old will be 34 when the deal expires, having agreed to some of the most lucrative terms in sporting history.

And now that the Norwegian will not be joining Real Madrid or Barcelona any time soon, he has the all-time Premier League goal record in his sights.

Stats guru Opta has revealed that Shearer, who scored 260 goals in 441 games at a rate of 0.59 goals per game.

They claim that if Haaland now makes 200 consecutive Premier League appearances, he would break the record in four or five years time.

That is if he maintains his absurd pace of 0.91 goals per game.

Haaland is currently on 79 goals, needing 182 to surpass Newcastle legend Shearer.

Upon his arrival in Manchester from Borussia Dortmund for £50m, many questioned whether Haaland would continue to dominate in England like he did Germany.

He was even compared to Darwin Nunez who signed to Liverpool in June 2022, the same summer Haaland joined Man City.

The Norway international has broken many records since arriving at the Etihad, becoming the quickest player ever to reach 50 Premier League goals, taking just 48 matches to hit the half-century.

He became the quickest player ever to reach 75 top-flight goals, taking just 77 matches to beat Shearer, who needed 93 games to achieve the feat.

His first season was groundbreaking. He hit 36 goals in 35 appearances to help Pep Guardiola's team lift the Premier League once again.

It was the most goals in a Premier League campaign ever, trumping Andrew Cole and Shearer's record of 34 in 1993/94 and 1994/95 respectively, when 42 matches were played per season.

He then followed that up with 27 goals in the 2023/24 season and currently sits on 16 this campaign.

However, a potential third golden boot is in danger of being snatched away as Mohamed Salah leads with 18 goals.

Upon the news of Haaland's mega contract Shearer posted on X: "Congratulations Erling Haaland. Nine and a half years? It surely shouldn't take you that long?"

Previously, Shearer's record was under threat to Harry Kane but he left Tottenham Hotspur in favour of Bayern Munich in 2023, leaving the league as the second all-time scorer with 213 goals.

Haaland's previous contract was set to expire in 2027 and included a release clause, raising speculation of a future move but Shearer is unlikely to be lucky a second time.

talkSPORT understands Haaland's new basic salary makes him the first ever Premier League player to earn £500,000-a-week, while image rights could see him take home a staggering £750,000-a-week.

It puts the total value close to £250million and overtakes Chelsea's nine-year deal for Cole Palmer to become the longest in Premier League history.

Reflecting on his new deal, Haaland said: "I am really happy to have signed my new contract and to be able to look forward to spending even more time at this great Club.

"Manchester City is a special Club, full of fantastic people with amazing supporters and it's the type of environment that helps bring the best out of everybody.

"I also want to thank Pep, his coaching staff, my teammates and everyone at the Club as they have all helped me so much in the past couple of years. They have made this such a special place to be and now I am City no matter what.

"I want to keep developing, keep working to get better and look to do my best to try and help us achieve more success going forward."
