Spursvs.Newcastle

sportsmole.co.uk, 4 January 2025, 11:19
Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Brandon Austin will make his competitive debut for the Lilywhites in their Premier League clash with Newcastle United.

Spurs are already missing first-choice shot-stopper Guglielmo Vicario due to an ankle injury, while second-choice Fraser Forster has seemingly succumbed to the sickness bug that has been sweeping through the Tottenham camp.

Spurs are said to have struck a deal to sign Slavia Prague goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky for £12.5m, but as the 21-year-old is not yet at Ange Postecoglou's disposal, Austin has come in for his first appearance.

The 25-year-old has been on the books at Tottenham since 2007 and will finally make his maiden appearance for the Lilywhites 18 years later, getting the nod over fellow home-grown goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman.

Austin for Forster is one of five changes that Postecoglou has made to the Tottenham lineup from their 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers on December 29, as Destiny Udogie, Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma and Son Heung-min also drop out of the side.

Sven Botman starts for Newcastle after injury

Udogie picked up a serious hamstring injury in the stalemate with Wolves, so Djed Spence returns from suspension at left-back, but Bentancur is now serving his own ban and has been replaced by Pape Sarr.

Postecoglou has also seen fit to replace Bissouma with Lucas Bergvall in the engine room, while Timo Werner steps in for Son on the left flank, as James Maddison is snubbed once again.

Meanwhile, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has made two changes to his lineup from their 2-0 success at Manchester United on Monday, and the Magpies boss has made the huge call to start Sven Botman in defence.

The Dutchman makes his first senior appearance for Newcastle since suffering an ACL injury almost 10 months ago, although he did complete 60 minutes of an Under-21s win over Chelsea on December 16.

Botman steps in for the suspended Fabian Schar in defence, where Tino Livramento also replaces ex-Spurs full-back Kieran Trippier, who came off with a knock in the win at Old Trafford.

Six places and eight points separate Spurs and Newcastle in the Premier League table, with Postecoglou's team languishing in the bottom half and the Magpies just three points off the Champions League spots.

Tottenham starting lineup: Austin; Porro, Gray, Dragusin, Spence; Bergvall, Sarr; Johnson, Kulusevski, Werner; Solanke

Subs: Whiteman, Reguilon, Dorrington, Hardy, Bissouma, Maddison, Olusesi, Son, Lankshear

Newcastle starting lineup: Dubravka; Livramento, Botman, Burn, Hall; Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton; Murphy, Isak, Gordon

Subs: Vlachodimos, Trippier, Barnes, Osula, Almiron, Kelly, Willock, Longstaff, Miley
