Southampton alarmingly on track to set Premier League record that no team wants

talksport.com, 30 December 2024, 09:17
Southampton are on track to set the ultimate unwanted Premier League record.

That's because they're currently projected to finish the season with the lowest points tally that the league has ever seen.

Saints have struggled to adapt to life in the top flight and have so far only managed to pick up six points from their 19 games.

By comparison, Southampton fans will be reluctant to look at the fortunes of Derby County back in 2007/08.

The Rams are infamously remembered for being the worst side in Premier League history after picking up just 11 points over the campaign.

That side featured Robbie Savage as captain, Roy Carroll and top scorer Kenny Miller.

But despite their lowly tally, they still had more points at this stage of the season that Southampton have managed.

At the halfway point of the 2007/08 campaign, Billy Davies' side had seven points on the board - one more than Ivan Juric's team have mustered so far.

It means that Southampton have serious work to do if they're to avoid that tag of being the worst-ever Premier League side.

The Saints secured promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs last season, beating Leeds United at Wembley Stadium to go up.

But adapting to life in the fast lane was tough for Russell Martin, who won just one game in the top-flight before being sacked as Saints manager earlier this month.

Southampton have so far lost 15 of their 19 games, drawing just three times in the process.

A large part of their struggle has been their struggles in front of goal, with Southampton scoring just 12 goals in 19 games so far.

That tally is the lowest in the Premier League.

Southampton have also conceded 39 times in the league this season - a tally that only betters that of two teams in Leicester and Wolves who have conceded 42 times each.

Next up for Southampton is a home clash with Brentford on Saturday, January 4.
