Shaw's Pochettino comments shed light on what manager will bring to Man Utd

With Mauricio Pochettino heavily linked to the Manchester United manager's job, it appears Luke Shaw would welcome an Old Trafford reunion with his former Southampton mentor

Luke Shaw once revealed that Mauricio Pochettino made him feel like the "best player" amid growing speculation that the pair could soon be reunited at Manchester United.

After Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was given his marching orders on Sunday, Paris Saint-Germain boss Pochettino has been heavily linked with a Premier League return and is reportedly keen on filling the Old Trafford vacancy.

Despite PSG rebuffing United's initial approach, the Argentine could still join the Red Devils at the end of the season, where he would be reunited with Shaw, who he coached when the pair were together at Southampton.

In fact, it was under the 49-year-old manager that Shaw flourished as a regular first team left-back having broken through the south coast side's illustrious academy.

While former Spurs boss Pochettino reportedly remains keen to take on the United role, it appears Shaw would certainly welcome his arrival if his previous comments are anything to go by.

Speaking about his time at Southampton under Pochettino, Shaw heaped praise on his former mentor within Spanish journalist Guillem Balague's book Brave New World: Inside Pochettino's Spurs.

"He used to call me his son," Shaw revealed. "That's how good our relationship was. I've had lots of ups and downs, but when I was with Pochettino it was only ever up, up, up.

"He made me feel that I was the best. He'd show me clips of my games and say, 'You could do this better'. Not in a horrible way. Not I could have done better, but I should have done better, because he knows I can be better.

"I think with Southampton he achieved the impossible. We were one of the best footballing teams in the league... I do hope that I can play for him again one day. And I think he really wants me to play under him again."

After establishing himself as one of the Premier League 's most promising left-backs under Pochettino at Southampton, Shaw sealed a move to United worth an estimated £34million in 2014 making him the most expensive British teenager in football history at the time.

Would Mauricio Pochettino be a good managerial appointment for Manchester United? Let us know in the comments section.

A shocking leg break sustained in 2015 put Shaw's career on hold as he struggled to recapture his form of old before speculation linking him with a move to Pochettino's Tottenham emerged.

After finding himself out-of-favour under Jose Mourinho, the left-back then established himself as an integral part of United's side under Solskjaer.

Shaw enjoyed a stunning season last term, helping the Red Devils to a second-place Premier League finish, before transferring his glittering form to his national team as he was one of England's stand-out players on their run to the final of Euro 2020 this summer.

Having once again experienced a dip in form amid United's dismal recent run of one win in their last seven Premier League outings, Shaw missed the club's midweek Champions League triumph over Villarreal following a head injury which he sustained in the recent derby defeat to neighbours Manchester City.

As the 26-year-old looks to get his United season back on track, it appears Pochettino could well be the man give him that much-needed confidence boost should the pair be granted their wish of an Old Trafford reunion.
