Saturday's Championship predictions including West Bromwich Albion vs. Portsmouth

sportsmole.co.uk, 25 January 2025, 06:05
Luton vs. Millwall (Saturday, 12.30pm)

Luton Town host Millwall in the Championship this weekend, still looking for their first win under new boss Matt Bloomfield.

The Hatters currently occupy an unwanted spot in the relegation zone, sitting 23rd in the Championship standings, one point away from safety.

We say: Luton Town 2-1 Millwall

Both of these sides are still searching for their first league victory under their new managers, although Millwall's wait has been considerably longer.

With Luton performing better in their home games this season, we think they can grab a much-needed win this weekend against the Lions.

Norwich vs. Swansea (Saturday, 12.30pm)

Having lost three consecutive away fixtures, Norwich City return home to Carrow Road this weekend to take on Swansea City in the Championship.

The Canaries have had a particularly tricky run of fixtures lately, with back-to-back games against promotion contenders Sheffield United and Leeds United.

We say: Norwich City 1-0 Swansea City

Both sides have endured difficult times in recent weeks, but we are going with the hosts to take the three points this weekend.

Norwich have a good record at home, and the Swans have lost four on the bounce away from home, so we expect the hosts to taste success here.

Stoke vs. Oxford Utd (Saturday, 12.30pm)

Stoke City host Oxford United this weekend, looking to move further away from the drop zone in the Championship table.

Heading into the weekend, the hosts are 19th in the Championship standings and seven points behind the visitors, with both teams having played 28 games so far this season.

We say: Stoke City 1-2 Oxford United

The visitors have been in fine form since Rowett took charge at the club last month, so we see them edging a tight encounter here.

For Stoke, the results have improved under Robins, but they are still not winning enough games and we expect that to continue for at least another week.

Bristol City vs. Blackburn (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Blackburn Rovers will travel to Ashton Gate to face fellow playoff hopefuls Bristol City in Saturday's Championship clash.

The Robins are sitting in ninth place in the Championship table, while Rovers are four points better off in sixth position.

We say: Bristol City 2-0 Blackburn Rovers

Bristol City may be winless in their last three competitive matches, but they have won four of their previous home league games, and we think that they will enjoy another successful outing at Ashton Gate, especially as the visitors have lost two of their last three Championship away matches.

> Championship preview: Bristol City vs Blackburn

Cardiff vs. Derby (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Looking to build on a hard-fought point last time out, Cardiff City will welcome Derby County to the Cardiff City Stadium for a Championship clash on Saturday afternoon.

The Bluebirds shared the points with Millwall during their most recent match, whilst the Rams were unable to earn anything from a battle with Sunderland.

We say: Cardiff City 2-0 Derby County

Looking to continue their impressive unbeaten run in January, Cardiff should have more than enough quality to cause Derby serious issues this weekend.

The Rams look like a different team amid an injury crisis in defence, and we feel that Warne's men will slump to yet another defeat on Saturday afternoon.

> Championship preview: Cardiff vs Derby

Coventry vs. Watford (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Looking to extend their league winning run to three matches, Coventry City will host Watford at The Coventry Building Society Arena on Saturday afternoon in the Championship.

The Sky Blues secured an impressive success at the home of Blackburn Rovers last time out, whilst the Hornets were defeated on their own patch by Preston North End.

We say: Coventry City 2-1 Watford

Unbeaten at The CBS Arena under the tutelage of Lampard, Coventry should be confident of recording another January success this weekend against Watford.

The Hornets suffered a number of injury problems during the defeat earlier in the week, with a mounting list of absentees set to wreak havoc for the Hertfordshire club.

> Championship preview: Coventry vs Watford

Preston vs. Middlesbrough (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Preston North End and Middlesbrough will both be targeting back-to-back victories when they face off in Saturday's Championship clash at Deepdale.

The hosts got the better of Watford in their midweek outing, while Boro claimed a 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday.

We say: Preston North End 1-1 Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough will be looking to take all three points to aid their playoff bid, but we think they may have to settle for a share of the spoils when they face a Preston side that have drawn five of their last seven home league matches.

> Championship preview: Preston vs Middlesbrough

QPR vs. Sheff Weds (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Two sides only separated by goal difference in the top half of the Championship table will do battle at Loftus Road on Saturday, as Queens Park Rangers welcome Sheffield Wednesday.

The 10th-placed hosts leapfrogged their visitors with a fourth straight victory in midweek, with both teams trailing the playoff spots by four points.

We say: Queens Park Rangers 2-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Both sides have enjoyed major improvements this season and will back themselves to cause problems for the opposition in what should be an entertaining encounter in the capital.

With momentum and home advantage on their side, we see Queens Park Rangers managing a fifth straight Championship win.

> Championship preview: QPR vs Sheff Weds

Sunderland vs. Plymouth (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Fighting hard for an overdue return to the Premier League, Sunderland will welcome strugglers Plymouth Argyle to the Stadium of Light in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The Black Cats enjoyed a success at the home of Derby County last time out, whilst the Green Army endured another sobering contest in the second-tier spotlight.

We say: Sunderland 3-0 Plymouth Argyle

Unbeaten at the Stadium of Light this term, Sunderland should have no issues easing past the attentions of a Plymouth side who have been rotten on the second-tier road.

The Green Army will still be reeling from their disaster against Burnley, and it could be just as painful for the Pilgrims in the North-East this weekend.

> Championship preview: Sunderland vs Plymouth

West Brom vs. Portsmouth (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Looking to return to winning ways after a three-game hiatus, West Bromwich Albion will welcome Portsmouth to The Hawthorns for a Championship match on Saturday afternoon.

The Baggies came up short at the home of Middlesbrough last time out, whilst Pompey enjoyed a much-needed victory at Fratton Park over Stoke City.

We say: West Bromwich Albion 1-0 Portsmouth

With a hostile Hawthorns crowd behind them on Mowbray's return, West Brom will be expecting a return to winning ways against relegation-threatened Portsmouth.

Pompey have been excellent at Fratton Park in recent times but have won just one away game all season, and we do not envisage the visitors adding to that tally in the Black Country this weekend.
