Saturday's Championship predictions including Hull City vs. Leeds United

sportsmole.co.uk, 4 January 2025, 06:05
Blackburn vs. Burnley (Saturday, 12.30pm)

Burnley will make the short trip to Ewood Park for Saturday's derby clash against arch-rivals Blackburn Rovers.

The Clarets are sitting in second place in the Championship table, while Blackburn are 10 points further back in fifth position.

We say: Blackburn Rovers 1-2 Burnley

Burnley have proven to be a tough team to beat, having avoided defeat in each of their last 12 Championship matches.

We think that they will continue that run by claiming a narrow victory in Saturday's derby, especially as they have won each of their last four away matches against Rovers.

Stoke vs. Plymouth (Saturday, 12.30pm)

New Stoke City manager Mark Robins will hope to start his career at the helm with a win when they host managerless Plymouth Argyle at bet365 Stadium on Saturday in the Championship.

The Potters are 19th with 26 points after 25 matchweeks and drew 0-0 with Burnley on Wednesday, while Plymouth are rooted to the bottom of the table in 24th place with 19 points, though they did draw 2-2 with 10th-placed Bristol City on January 1 after parting company with boss Wayne Rooney one day prior.

We say: Stoke City 2-1 Plymouth Argyle

The appointment of Robins should mean that Stoke come into the clash with fresh ideas and are likely to be more confident than their opponents of achieving a positive result.

Though Plymouth's draw last time out was a step in the right direction, they are still managerless, and it would not be surprising if they succumbed to defeat on Saturday.

Swansea vs. West Brom (Saturday, 12.30pm)

Looking to bounce back from a sobering defeat on New Year's Day, Swansea City will welcome West Bromwich Albion to Swansea.com Stadium on Saturday afternoon in the Championship.

The Swans were smashed at the home of relegation candidates Portsmouth last time out, whilst the Baggies recorded a home success over Preston North End.

We say: Swansea City 1-1 West Bromwich Albion

After a battering on the South Coast, Swansea are up against it once again as they welcome a playoff-chasing West Brom side in South Wales.

The Baggies are still going about their second-tier duties admirably despite the shock departure of Corberan and should be good enough for a point this weekend.

Bristol City vs. Derby (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Bristol City will look to extend their unbeaten run to four matches when they welcome Derby County to Ashton Gate for Saturday's Championship contest.

Meanwhile, the Rams will be desperate to produce a positive response after losing back-to-back games against Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday.

We say: Bristol City 2-0 Derby County

Bristol City have won three of their last four matches at Ashton Gate, and we think they will make full use of home advantage to take three points off a Derby side that have lost three of their previous four games in the Championship.

Hull City vs. Leeds (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Aiming to extend their lead at the top of the Championship table, Leeds United will make the short trip to the MKM Stadium to take on Hull City on Saturday.

The visitors have extended an unbeaten streak to seven matches and moved to the summit of the division over the festive period, while their hosts dropped back into the relegation zone following a New Year's Day defeat.

We say: Hull City 0-2 Leeds United

Having seemingly corrected their away form in recent weeks, we back Leeds United to make their superior quality count on Saturday and seal another victory in comfortable fashion in this Yorkshire derby.

Middlesbrough vs. Cardiff (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Michael Carrick's Middlesbrough continue their quest for promotion from the Championship on Saturday when they host Cardiff City at the Riverside Stadium.

The home team are fifth with 40 points after 25 games and beat Hull City 1-0 on Wednesday, while their opponents are second last in 23rd place with 22 points from 24 matchweeks and drew 1-1 with Coventry City on January 1.

We say: Middlesbrough 2-0 Cardiff City

Although Middlesbrough are in the midst of an injury crisis, they have been difficult to beat in recent weeks, and it is hard to see them losing against Cardiff.

Additionally, the visitors' record on the road is poor, and it would not be surprising if their defensive frailty was once again exposed on Saturday.

Norwich vs. Coventry (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Aiming to extend their unbeaten run in the second tier to four matches, Norwich City will host Coventry City at Carrow Road in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The Canaries secured a hard-fought success at Luton Town to commence their 2025 schedule, whilst the Sky Blues were frustratingly held by Cardiff City in South Wales last time out.

We say: Norwich City 2-0 Coventry City

Averaging well over two goals per game at their Carrow Road base, Norwich should be able to bag a few strikes against a Coventry side who looked vulnerable at the back versus Cardiff last time out.

The Sky Blues are unable to call upon a glut of their attacking stars in East Anglia, meaning that a sobering defeat could be on the horizon for Lampard's men.

Preston vs. Oxford Utd (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Preston North End are set to welcome Oxford United on Saturday to Deepdale in their 26th Championship game of the season.

The hosts are two points and three places ahead of the visitors in 15th with 29 points and lost 3-1 against West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday, while Oxford beat Millwall 1-0 on January 1 and are five points and four places above the relegation zone.

We say: Preston North End 2-2 Oxford United

It is difficult to overlook Oxford's good form of late under Rowett, and they should arguably come into Saturday's clash as favourites.

However, Preston have been resilient at home despite some of their struggles this season, and they will no doubt use the home crowd to their advantage and cause Oxford problems.

Sheff Weds vs. Millwall (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Aiming to narrow their three-point gap to the top six in the Championship table, Sheffield Wednesday will welcome Millwall to Hillsborough on Saturday.

The visitors sit ninth after a New Year's Day victory, while their visitors were unable to make a winning start to life under Alex Neil and sit 13th.

We say: Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 Millwall

With confidence from a convincing home win on New Year's Day, we back Sheffield Wednesday to keep building momentum with another dominant display and victory at Hillsborough against a Millwall side struggling for form.

Watford vs. Sheff Utd (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Both aiming to bounce back to winning ways after tricky runs in the festive period, Watford and Sheffield United will do battle at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

The visitors have dropped to third spot in the Championship table in the midst of a three-match winless streak after Christmas, while their hosts now sit eighth following back-to-back defeats.

We say: Watford 1-1 Sheffield United

Wounded by injuries and the end of their hot streak since Christmas, we see Sheffield United being held at Vicarage Road and playing out a share of the spoils, which may be relatively pleasing for both sides after a busy festive period.
