Salah overtakes Kane, Shearer and Henry to set stellar new Premier League record

talksport.com, 29 December 2024, 19:12
Mohamed Salah created Premier League history in Liverpool's 5-0 win at West Ham on Sunday as the forward continues to turn heads.

The 32-year-old chipped in with a goal and two assists at the London Stadium to help the Reds extend their lead to eight points at the top of the table.

After Luis Diaz broke the deadlock in the 30th minute, Salah was credited with the assist for Cody Gakpo to grab the visitors' second.

Salah jinxed past Konstantinos Mavropanos in the box, before poking a pass though Max Kilman's legs to gift Gakpo an open goal in the 30th minute.

And Salah then put the cherry on top of what was a perfect first half from Arne Slot's men by firing in a third for Liverpool.

Found unmarked inside the edge of the box by Curtis Jones, Salah took one touch, before curling an effort into the near post that proved too hot to handle for Alphonse Areola.

In doing so, Salah became the first player in Premier League history to both score and assist in eight matches in a single season.

He had been tied with Harry Kane, Thierry Henry, Alan Shearer, Bruno Fernandes and Robin van Persie on seven.

And just for good measure, Salah then popped up with another assist, this time for Diogo Jota, who made it 5-0 in the 84th minute following Trent Alexander-Arnold's deflected long range strike at the start of the second half.

Salah has also now either scored or assisted in 11 consecutive Premier League fixtures.

That has been done on just seven occasions since the inception of the Premier League in 1992.

The Egyptian forward has managed the feat twice previously, having been directly involved in goals in 15 straight games in 2021, and 12 in 2023.

In what has been a sensational campaign for Salah, he has now been involved in a whopping 37 goals in all competitions.

He is just two goals shy of his total tally of 39 goal involvements from last term.

Salah is the Premier League's top scorer with 17 goals, while he also leads the assists charts with 13.

No one in Premier League history has reached 30 goal involvements in quicker time than Salah [18 matches].

He is just the second player to do so after Luis Suarez, who needed 19 games to reach the tally in the 2013/14 campaign.

It was only on Boxing Day that saw Salah join an exclusive club of scoring a century of home league goals.

In what has been a stunning 2024 for the ex-Chelsea man, no player has been involved in more goals than Salah this calendar year in Europe's top five leagues.

Salah boasts 52 goal involvements [29 goals, 23 assists] to show why many consider him to be the world's best player on form.

But with the player free to speak to foreign clubs in January regarding a free transfer, Liverpool fans will be desperate he extends his stay at Anfield.

However for Salah, all attention will be on this season and the silverware he could end up scooping come May.

Liverpool sit eight points clear at the top as they look to win their second Premier League title.

Slot's side remain in contention to win all four trophies, with the Carabao Cup holders to face Tottenham for a place in March's final.

The Anfield giants also sit top of the Champions League table, and have an FA Cup third round tie with Accrington Stanley on the horizon to look forward to.

Next up for the Reds is a home clash with rivals Manchester United next week.
