Salah and Mane above Torres, Suarez, Owen and Fowler as Liverpool's best PL forwards

talksport.com, 19 September 2021, 16:10
Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have been 'the best' forwards Liverpool have ever had in the Premier League.

Fernando Torres, Luis Suarez, Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler were all incredible strikers for the Reds, but they do not compare to their current star pairing, says talkSPORT's Tony Cascarino.

There's certainly no questioning the impact Liverpool's African duo have had on the club since signing for Jurgen Klopp.

Mane scored his 100th Liverpool goal in their comfortable win against Crystal Palace and a week before that, Salah achieved the same number but in the Premier League with a strike against Leeds.

Liverpool boast a legendary list of former strikers, including the likes of local boys Fowler and Owen, fan-favourite imports Torres and Suarez, and even club icon Ian Rush who played four seasons in the Premier League towards the end of his legendary Anfield career.

But, with Salah and Mane continuing their stunning output for the Merseyside club, Cascarino said on the Weekend Sports Breakfast: "They are the best they've had [in the Premier League].

"Out of the front-three Liverpool have got now, with Roberto Firmino, I would say two of the three are the best they've had. I think Salah and Mane are as good as anything, and I think Salah is number one.

"I think Suarez was extraordinary, probably even better than Torres at Liverpool. I think Firmino has had periods where he has been incredible for Liverpool.

"The last year has been tricky for him, he's not quite played to what Liverpool fans know he is capable of."

A key factor in Liverpool's Premier League and Champions League victories has been their front-three who have interlinked so successfully during their time together under Jurgen Klopp.

In comparison to other 'front-threes' the Reds have had, Cascarino says the current trio cannot be looked past.

"I can't think of a better three," added the talkSPORT host.

"I think Sturridge, Sterling and Suarez were unbelievable, but I do think this three are better over the period they have been at Anfield.

"They will prove that they are the best three Liverpool have had in the Premier League."

With Salah recently becoming the fifth quickest player in history to score 100 Premier League goals, Cascarino's point is extremely valid.

Not only that, he has one of the best goal and assist to game ratios compared to former Reds - in 209 games and counting for the club, he has recorded 179 total goal contributions.

With the numbers Salah has achieved since 2017, only Suarez has produced the figures that can be argued with.

But without any doubt the Egyptian has been a crucial player for the Reds and they will desperately hope to tie him down on a new contract soon.

Liverpool's top forwards of Premier League era

10. Ian Rush: 170 apps, 70 goals, 14 assists - 84 total goal contributions (excludes pre-1992/93 record)

9. Daniel Sturridge: 160 apps, 68 goals, 26 assists - 94 total goal contributions

8. Fernando Torres: 142 apps, 81 goals, 20 assists - 101 total goal contributions

7. Dirk Kuyt: 285 apps, 71 goals, 40 assists - 111 total goal contributions

6. Luis Suarez: 133 apps, 82 goals, 47 assists - 129 total goal contributions

5. Sadio Mane: 244 apps, 100 goals, 43 assists - 143 total goal contributions

4. Roberto Firmino: 295 apps, 88 goals, 69 assists - 157 total goal contributions

3. Mohamed Salah: 209 apps, 130 goals, 49 assists - 179 total goal contributions

2. Michael Owen: 297 apps, 158 goals, 50 assists - 208 total goal contributions

1. Robbie Fowler: 369 apps, 183 goals, 50 assists - 233 total goal contributions
