Ryanair slammed for Jadon Sancho tweet moments after England World Cup snub

Gareth Southgate left Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho out of his England squad for the World Cup, prompting Ryanair to rub salt into his wounds with a brutal tweet

Jadon Sancho was the target of a brutal tweet from airline Ryanair after he was left out of the England squad for the World Cup.

The Manchester United forward was a notable absence from Gareth Southgate's squad for the tournament in Qatar. He was one of a handful of names to drop out of the group of players that reached the Euro 2020 final last year following his underwhelming time at Old Trafford since a big-money move from Borussia Dortmund.

The likes of Leicester's James Maddison and Newcastle's Callum Wilson have been called up to the Three Lions squad in Sancho's place.

The 23-cap international has turned in marginally-improved performances this season but that has not been enough for him to earn a place on the plane to Qatar. Nevertheless, Ryanair were on hand to offer him a holiday as the Premier League takes a break for the tournament.

Taking to Twitter, their official account wrote: "@Sanchooo10 we'll still fly you somewhere." Their taunt was accompanied by a kiss emoji. Some supporters were not particularly pleased with the post, however. One pointed to the fact that it was "unnecessary trolling"by Ryanair, whilst another fan called it "heartless".

Some fans even took the opportunity to take aim at the airline themselves. One particularly disgruntled supporter wrote: "Sorry but if I was Sancho the last thing I would do after being rejected by England is fly with Ryanair. Easyjet is clear of you".

Ryanair's mocking message to Sancho is another disappointing episode for the young wideman. The 22-year-old has scored just eight goals and provided four assists as a Red Devil - a huge downturn on the 16 goals and 19 assists he chalked up during his final season with Dortmund.

United legend Peter Schmeichel has criticised his performances and claimed that Sancho was not worthy of a place in the England squad in any case. Speaking to Sky Sports after the Red Devils' Carabao Cup victory over Aston Villa on Thursday evening, he said: "I don't think he's done enough.

"I'm a little bit disappointed with the talent that he has, and yes it's difficult to come to Old Trafford with that price tag, I understand that. But he's shown that he can do whatever he did at Borussia Dortmund, he just hasn't done it enough."

United are set to take on Fulham in their final Premier League fixture before the enforced break. It remains to be seen if Sancho will feature in the game. The winger has been ruled out of each of the last three matches in all competitions through illness, whilst he was as an unused substitute in the 1-0 victory over West Ham at the end of October.
