Roy Keane recalls "wet and wild" highlight that he ranks above Man Utd memories

Roy Keane has spoken about a "wet and wild" experience he had during his time at the 1994 World Cup with the Republic of Ireland and ranked it as one of the best of his career Roy Keane has named an unusual highlight from his previous World Cup experiences

Roy Keane has recalled a memorable trip to the "Wet'n Wild" waterpark in America during the 1994 World Cup - and quipped that the experience was the one of the best of his storied career.

The Manchester United icon spent over a decade at Old Trafford, where he won seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the Champions League title. Keane also clocked up 67 international caps for the Republic of Ireland and played every minute of his country's four matches at the tournament, which was held across the United States.

Ireland were dumped out in the knockout stages by the Netherlands, but Keane didn't seem too down when he recalled the activities he got up to during his downtime at the tournament.

Speaking to Micah Richards and Gary Neville on a World Cup preview for Sky Bet, the former Manchester United captain explained: "The highlight of my career in terms of World Cups, obviously was 1994, but that was going to the waterparks in Florida in between the games. It was brilliant.

"Wet 'n Wild Waterpark. Yeah it was brilliant. You know, when you get days off, which we got plenty with Ireland, we'd go straight down to the waterpark. Brilliant, honestly. Wet 'n Wild, recommend it."

Although Ireland performed admirably at the tournament under then-boss Jack Charlton, the tournament would prove to be Keane's last World Cup following his high-profile bust-up with Mick McCarthy before the 2002 tournament, which was held in Japan and South Korea.

Keane left the club's training camp in Saipan on the eve of the tournament after being outspoken about the quality of the training facilities that were on offer.

Despite the fact he ended up missing the tournament, Keane insisted he had "no regrets" during a discussion with Mark Pougatch back in 2018.

Keane said: "I don't have any regrets. I'm disappointed in how it happened and how it panned out, but there are two sides to every story. There was a lot of talk when we got over there about the facilities, no bibs, no balls, no cones. That really irritated me because if that happened to Germany, England or Brazil, there would have been uproar. For some reason because it's Ireland, it's a laugh and joke.

"I had enough years of that type of behaviour and I wanted to give us the best chance of winning. Into the week, just before we're leaving Saipan, we had a bit of a team meeting and I was confronted by the manager and I'd do it again tomorrow.

"I've always said that I've never lost a wink of sleep about how I reacted to the accusations that were made against me but I'd have loved to play in a World Cup. Of course I would. That's what the game is all about. It wasn't to be but I don't look back and regret my actions."
