Ronaldo remains silent on social media as rival Messi wins World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo has remained silent to his 780 million followers on social media after Lionel Messi guided Argentina to World Cup glory.

The 35-year-old scored twice in Sunday's final against France which ended 3-3, before he found the back of the net in the penalty shootout.

Fans and football legends have been quick to praise Messi and Argentina, with three-time World Cup winner Pele lauding the Paris Saint-Germain forward, along with fellow Brazilian Neymar.

Even boxing star Canelo Alvarez congratulated Argentina for their triumph, despite feuding with Messi earlier in the tournament.

Piers Morgan was also forced to eat humble pie after predicting a France win, with Messi to be left in tears at the end of the match.

But instead of tears of sadness, there were tears of joy as Messi spearheaded Argentina to their first World Cup since 1986,

One man that has not publicly congratulated Messi is his long-time rival Ronaldo, who is yet to comment on Argentina's success.

Ronaldo boasts over 780 million followers from his Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts.

However not one of his social media channels have seen him make a post about the Barcelona legend.

As well as winning the World Cup, Messi also scooped the Golden Ball award for being the best player in Qatar.

He has become the first player to win the honour twice after also being crowned as the World Cup's top performer in 2014.

Speaking prior to Portugal's quarter-final exit at the hands of Morocco, Ronaldo insisted that his - or anyone else's - legacy would not be impacted by whether or not they win the World Cup.

He stated: "Even if I win the World Cup that will continue. Some people like me more, some less.

"It's like in life, some like blondes, some like brunette.

"I have always had to show what I can do year after year. I would love to win this tournament.

"I'm ambitious but if you tell me I won't win any more tournaments I would still be happy given all I have won.

"In the history books all other records will be there. But obviously a World Cup on the shelf wouldn't be bad. It would be a dream."
