A €40million (£34m) fee has been agreed, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, however the saga is far from over with Arsenal still chasing the Blues striker.
Roma are still working very hard to persuade the Chelsea youth product to switch West London for the capital of Italy and their new manager, Jose Mourinho has even called him in further attempts to seal the deal.
Waiting in the wings are Premier League rivals Arsenal, who, on the back of a demoralising 2-0 loss to newly promoted Brentford in the opening game of the season could really do with a recognised striker.
Since Thomas Tuchel's appointment, Abraham has fallen heavily down the pecking order.
For a striker who will have aims of getting back into the England squad, he will need to be wearing a different club shirt by the end of August.
Abraham featured prominently under former manager Frank Lampard and that faith was rewarded in his first full season in the Premier League.
He netted 15 times in 34 apperances as he helped his former manager finish fourth in the 2019/20 season.
The following summer saw his place come under considerably more threat with Timo Werner's signing and after Lampard's sacking, game time came at a premium.
The striker is undoubtedly out of favour with Tuchel and after the German manager signed Romelu Lukaku for a club record £97.5m, his days at Chelsea seem all but over.
One way or another it is likely that Abraham will be wearing a new shirt this season and it's just a matter of who out of Roma's or Arsenal's that he will be pulling on.
