Rio Ferdinand's N'Golo Kante claim lays bare his Manchester United worries

Rio Ferdinand 's N'Golo Kante claim has laid bare his worries about Manchester United.

The ex-Red Devils defender has admitted the two-time Premier League winner coming to Old Trafford would not solve the team's issues, despite his exceptional work rate.

Kante is regarded as one of the best midfielders in the game and has helped Chelsea in their resurgence under Thomas Tuchel, while United remain perilous in that department themselves.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is yet to find a settled midfield, with Ferdinand believing the solution to his problem is more complex than one stellar signing.

"I see players pressing but there's no one coming in behind it like [Jadon] Sancho goes to press and he looks around after his initial press and there's no one around it," Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel, Vibe with Five.

Ferdinand says Kante would not fix the problems Man Utd have

"He's doing a one-man press.

"Is that the players not listening to the manager and not carrying out the task in hand or is it the players just saying 'we can't do it', not being able to do it?

"I can't understand what it is."

The 42-year-old, who had explained why the Red Devils' lack of pressing in a problem, added: "We've all cried out, all of the Manchester United fanbase are saying a defensive midfielder is needed.

"Watching the last few games, I don't even think that player covers over the cracks.

"I just think no one player can absolutely change everything if the structure of the team isn't working to the fundamentals and has no foundations.

"One player ain't changing it, I go back to my point about pressing, it doesn't matter if Michael Carrick or Kante is playing in there, if Sancho is pressing on his own and Kante is in there by himself, you think he's going to be able to cover four or five men?

"That's what I'm saying, I saw it far too many times at the weekend, I know we're just isolating this weekend's game [a 4-2 defeat at Leicester City] but I've seen it many times before in the last three or four weeks, I've watched Manchester United intensely.

"There are too many occasions where I see a player go to press and the team aren't behind him.

"I'm not talking one or two players, the team aren't pressing behind it. And you can't press a team like that."

One man who has been scrutinised for his lack of pressing is superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who Solskjaer was quick to defend in his pre-match press conference as United prepare to Serie A side Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday.

"We have got 11 players out there with different roles," Solskjaer explained ahead when asked about the issue.

"We put a team out we think will win a game, if we don't win there will always be criticism — he [Ronaldo] is doing everything he can to help the team."
