Richarlison and Romero bury hatchet on awkward reunion after Tottenham transfer

mirror.co.uk, 9 July 2022, 17:35
Tottenham's £60million man Richarlison and his new teammate, Cristian Romero, put any past animosity behind them after they came face-to-face for the first time at Hotspur Way Richarlison and Cristian Romero are now teammates but clashed on the pitch last season

Tottenham new boy Richarlison and Cristian Romero were cheered on by their teammates as they buried the hatchet following the Brazilian striker's £60million transfer.

Spurs shelled out big money to prise Richarlison away from Everton last week in order to bolster their attacking options. The 25-year-old has evolved into one of the Premier League's top forwards during his four-year stint at Goodison Park, but was keen to move on this summer after helping the Toffees retain their top-flight status in the final weeks of the season.

Chelsea were reportedly also interested in striking a deal for Richarlison, but Spurs managed to fend off competition from their London rivals - and all eyes were on Romero after Richarlison's arrival was confirmed following their previous flare-ups on the pitch.

The fiery Spurs centre-half clashed with Richarlison in both of last year's games with Everton; the duo went head-to-head after a penalty shout back in November before Romero left the ex-Toffees man in a heap with a strong challenge in the 5-0 win back in March.

However, the pair were quick to put any previous bad blood to bed at Hotspur Way - much to the amusement of their teammates, who were watching on.

A clip shared by Tottenham's official page shows the team canteen cheering as Richarlison and Romero shared a brief embrace while grinning sheepishly after coming face-to-face for the first time since the striker's transfer.

Spurs boss Antonio Conte has been busy in the transfer market in recent weeks after guiding the Londoners to an unexpected top-four finish last term. As well as acquiring the services of Richarlison, the Italian has also snapped up Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma and Clement Lenglet; who put the finishing touches on a season-long loan move from Barcelona on Saturday.

In his first interview since joining the club, Richarlison admits that working with Conte was a major factor in his decision to join Spurs - and that he "couldn't believe" that the Londoners had tabled an offer to sign him.

Speaking to Tottenham's official website, Richarlison said: "I'm very happy for this moment. I remember when I was in Brazil and came the offer from Tottenham, I couldn't believe it. And after I signed the contract, even more so. When I arrived here it gave me a chill in my stomach to see my new team-mates and a new home.

"Now it's about working with the great coach I have, with great team-mates too. I hope to make history here in this shirt."
