Rangnick's thoughts on Klopp and Guardiola offer insight into Man Utd plan

Ralf Rangnick is expected to take charge at Man Utd until the end of the season and will arrive with a clear philosophy having previously praised the work of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp

Manchester United look set to appoint Ralf Rangnick until the end of the season as they look to revive their campaign.

A poor run of results saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sacked last weekend, with a defeat to Watford proving the final straw.

United made it clear they were looking to appoint an interim boss before pursuing a permanent manager in the summer.

Rangnick has been the man they've turned to, with the German seen as a major coup for the floundering Premier League side.

The 69-year-old's track record in various roles has earned him huge plaudits. He has helped influence some of the game's biggest names and shown a shrewd eye for recruitment.

But it is his clear philosophy that has also been one of his hallmarks.

Rangnick pioneered the concept of pressing - something United have been criticised for not doing enough.

His previous comments about Jurgen Klopp and his Liverpool side provide an insight into what he admires in teams - and what he is likely to implement at Old Trafford.

"If I think of Jürgen Klopp and try to describe him as a coach, then No 1 for me is his tactical approach," Rangnick told The Times previously.

"He has always been able to transform his idea of football, the way he wants his team to play, on to the pitch."

Rangnick also added: "When you see Liverpool play, you know it is them. This is a special kind of football. It is different. It should never be boring.

"Jürgen sees the game through the eyes of what happens when the other team has the ball, and what does his team have to do to win the ball back? Either in pressing situations or counter-pressing situations."

Liverpool recently smashed United 5-0 at Old Trafford and just weeks later Manchester City controlled proceedings as they saw off the Red Devils, again on their own patch.

Pep Guardiola has won three Premier League titles in four years and is hailed for his possession-based style.

Rangnick was equally complimentary about the Catalan, but again highlighted Klopp's approach.

He said: "Pep Guardiola, the Manchester City manager, more or less sees the game with what happens when his team has the ball but we must say that Pep's teams are also very well organised with regard to high counter-pressing and pressing football.

"To reduce him to a ball-possession orientated coach is wrong.

"The difference is that Jürgen's teams play in a much more proactive way, he always wants to give his team the idea of what happens if we lose the ball and how can we immediately win it back? That is an offensive approach."
