Ralf Rangnick to 'have a say' in who gets Man Utd manager's job permanently

Ralf Rangnick will have his say in Manchester United's recruitment process for their next permanent manager, while he could also be in the frame for the job himself

Manchester United will allow Ralf Rangnick to contribute to the process of appointing their next permanent manager, according to reports.

The German, 63, is poised to be unveiled as United interim boss until the end of the season, although this has been held up by the visa process.

Rangnick has a celebrated reputation as a manager, but he is also renowned for his work away from the dugout as a sporting director.

He is leaving his post as Lokomotiv Moscow's head of sports and development in order to take up his first job in the Premier League.

During negotiations with United, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward insisted Rangnick stays on in a consultancy role for two years after his short spell in the dugout ends next summer.

Will Ralf Rangnick prove a good appointment for Manchester United? Have your say in the comments!

This means he will have an important role to play in appointing the Red Devils' first permanent manager since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was sacked last Sunday.

That is according to the Daily Telegraph, which adds Rangnick himself could be in the conversation for the job if he is able to bring about a drastic turnaround in form this season.

The former RB Leipzig supremo prefers to coach rather than work in a backroom capacity, so he could be open to scrapping his consultancy role to become manager on a full-time basis.

Nonetheless, United's priority target remains Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino, while Ajax's Erik ten Hag is the alternative option.

The report also claims the degree of Rangnick's input into the recruitment process will depend on how successful his stint as interim manager is.

United chiefs hope his six months working with the squad will make him ideally suited to decide which coach will take the club forward in seasons to come.

In the meantime, Rangnick will hope to be granted a visa so he can get to work at the Red Devils' Carrington training ground.

He will not travel to Stamford Bridge for Sunday's blockbuster Premier League encounter against Chelsea while he awaits a work permit.

Therefore, Michael Carrick is set to continue in his caretaker role and will lead the club again after Tuesday's 2-0 victory at Villarreal in the Champions League.

United's dire run of five defeats in their last seven top-flight fixtures leaves them eighth in the table and there is a real possibility of them dropping into the bottom half if they do not pull off an unlikely win in west London on Sunday.
