Back-to-back defeats under Domenico Tedesco means Leipzig's top-four ambitions are hanging by a thread. Monday's defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach - a game in which Nkunku netted his 18th league goal of a prolific season - left Die Roten Bullen in fifth place, a point behind Freiburg albeit with a vastly superior goal difference. Leipzig picked up just a point from their last two games of the Hinrunde, and a repeat of that would gift Freiburg, who scored four points on Matchdays 16 and 17, a UEFA Champions League place for the very first time. "It's no longer in our hands," said captain Peter Gulasci. "Of course, we have two games left in which we can get six points, but it could also not be enough." The hosts, who are unbeaten in 10 competitive games against Augsburg, will be without the suspended Mohamed Simakan, though Amadou Haidara could make his first appearance since picking up a knee injury in late March.
Augsburg, by contrast, do have control of their Bundesliga future. Six points above the bottom three, a point from their last 180 minutes of the season for Markus Weinzierl's side will see them mathematically safe. Two wins - over Wolfsburg and Bochum - in their last five games have kept Die Fuggerstädters' heads above water, and with a home game against relegated Greuther Fürth to come, they will be optimistic regardless of their result at the Red Bull Arena. Left-back Iago is a slight doubt after limping out of the Matchday 32 defeat to Cologne with a knee injury.
