Preview: Brighton & Hove Albion Women vs. Arsenal Women - prediction, team news, lineups

sportsmole.co.uk, 21 January 2023, 01:25
Arsenal Women will attempt to claim a ninth consecutive away victory in the Women's Super League to 11 matches when they face Brighton & Hove Albion Women at the Broadfield Stadium on Sunday.

While the Gunners are currently in third position in the WSL table, the hosts are in 11th place after losing to Leicester City last weekend.

Match preview

After being appointed as Brighton boss, Jens Scheuer would have been disappointed with his team's performance in his first game in charge.

The Seagulls were thrashed 3-0 away to Leicester, who claimed their first points of the season as a result of the victory.

The defeat leaves Brighton just four points clear of one and only relegation place, which is occupied by the Foxes.

Brighton offered more resilience in midweek when they played out a goalless draw with West Ham United in the League Cup, before winning the subsequent penalty shootout to claim a bonus point, although it was not enough for the Seagulls to progress from the group stage.

They will now turn their attention to Sunday's contest, where they will be aiming to pull off a surprise result to secure the first win of Scheuer's tenure.

Arsenal missed the chance to move level with league leaders Chelsea last weekend when they faced their title rivals at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners looked set to claim a crucial victory after Kim Little dispatched her spot-kick in the 57th minute, but Sam Kerr rescued a point for her side with an 89th-minute equaliser.

Although Arsenal remain three points adrift of Chelsea with a game in hand, they slipped down to third position after Manchester United moved above them on goal difference following a 6-0 win over Liverpool.

Including last season, Jonas Eidevall's side have won their last eight WSL away games, scoring 24 goals and keeping seven consecutive clean sheets in that period.

They also boast an impressive head-to-head record with Brighton, having won their last seven competitive games against the Seagulls.

Team News

The visitors could be without the services of Megan Connolly and Elisabeth Terland, who were both absent for the midweek cup game due to thigh injuries.

Dejana Stefanovic was forced off on her debut last weekend due to a back problem, and after missing Wednesday's meeting with West Ham, she is a doubt for Sunday's contest.

Lydia Williams recently joined the club from Paris Saint-Germain, and if all the necessary paperwork is completed, the goalkeeper could be given her Brighton debut.

As for the Gunners, they are still unable to call upon Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema, with the pair sidelined for an extended period due to anterior cruciate ligament injuries.

Midfielders Victoria Pelova, Kathrine Kuhl and goalkeeper Sabrina D'Angelo have joined the club in the current transfer window, and after being unused substitutes against Chelsea, they may have to settle for places on the bench once again.

Eidevall could make one change to the side that drew last weekend, with Katie McCabe set to replace Lina Hurtig in the starting lineup.

Brighton & Hove Albion Women possible starting lineup:

L. Williams; Fox, Bergsvand, Morse, Pattinson; Olme, Visalli, Park, Robinson; Green, Lee

Arsenal Women possible starting lineup:

Zinsberger; Wienroither, Williamson, Rafaelle, Catley; Walti, Little, Foord, Maanum, McCabe; Blackstenius

We say: Brighton & Hove Albion Women 0-2 Arsenal Women
