Palmer visibly stunned after being told what his great uncle did

talksport.com, 25 February 2025, 17:14
Cole Palmer recently discovered that he isn't the only superstar in his family.

The attacking midfielder has been Chelsea's standout performer since arriving at Stamford Bridge in 2023.

Palmer has netted 39 goals in 74 games offering up numbers comparable with the legendary Blues midfielder Frank Lampard.

And his international career looks set for a similar trajectory particularly after his exploits at the Euros when he superbly netted the Three Lions' equaliser in the final against Spain.

Such talent doesn't come along every day, or so it seems as much like the Bellingham's, the Palmer family appear to be a gifted crop.

That's because Palmer's great uncle had a talent in the world of music, so much so that his band titled 'Sweet Sensation' had a number one hit in the 1970s.

During an episode on TNT Sports show 'In my Blood,' Palmer sat down with DJ and radio presenter Kenny Allstar to discuss his family and its roots.

In the clip, the BBC Radio 1Xtra presenter told Palmer that he had music royalty in his family to which the Chelsea star replied: "I've heard about it, I don't know what it is though."

Aiming to shed further light on his family history, Allstar pulled out a Sweet Sensation vinyl from a drawer before explaining the band's accomplishments.

Palmer admitted that he knew little about the band before Allstar came prepared with a video clip.

"I heard (about them), obviously people in my family have spoken about it. But I never listened to or researched it," the 22-year-old said as he watched the band in action.

"He's too young there I can't recognise him," Palmer added.

The former Manchester City academy graduate has long shown pride in his roots which trace back to the Caribbean Island of St Kitts & Nevis.

Palmer wears the flag of the tiny nation on his boots alongside the St George's cross.

His exploits have seen him become a household name in both countries with many anticipating even greater heights in the coming years.

After an encouraging start to the season for both Palmer and Chelsea, things have tailed off with four defeats in their last five games.

That has coincided with Palmer failing to hit the target in each of his last five outings and missing a gilt-edged chance in Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa.

That said, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has laughed off any concerns over Palmer's form, instead praising him for his willingness to take responsibility whenever he is on the pitch.

"I'm not concerned about Cole," Maresca said. "Cole is a human being and during the season he can have some moments where he struggles a little bit more.

"For sure, in terms of numbers, goals and assists, it's a moment where he struggles. But in the end, he had a chance [against Aston Villa]. He was there, then he missed - okay, but he was there. The problem is when you are not there.

"It's not just about Cole. We had more chances with different players, but because it's Cole and everyone relies on him, expects him to score goals, when he misses everyone is watching that.

"For me, it's okay; he just needs to continue working in the way he's working. We need top players like Cole, and we are not worried about Cole at all."

Danny Murphy defends Cole Palmer and insists he's still one of England's best players!
