No Cunha but only Chelsea and Liverpool boast better Spurs record than Wolves

talksport.com, 15 February 2024, 12:47
Tottenham can tighten their grip on the Premier League's top four when they host Wolves this weekend.

Spurs maintained their unbeaten top-flight start in 2024 after coming from behind to secure a dramatic 2-1 win over Brighton last time out.

Brennan Johnson's stoppage-time strike coupled with Aston Villa's loss to Manchester United saw Tottenham rise back up to fourth.

The north Londoners are holding onto a Champions League spot by just a point ahead of facing bogey-side Wolves.

Spurs have lost three of their last four Premier League games against Wolves, including the last two in a row.

However, Gary O'Neil's side saw their impressive home form snapped by a 2-0 defeat to Brentford last time out that left them eleventh.

Tottenham vs Wolves: One in, One out

The two sides come into this fixture in drastically different circumstances.

Tottenham captain Heung-min Son is in line to make his first start since returning from the Asia Cup last week.

The South Korean emerged from the bench to assist Johnson's winner for Spurs against Brighton last time out.

That contribution has meant Son has been directly involved in nine goals in his last eight Premier League appearances (4 goals, 5 assists).

His 18 goals and assists this season have been worth 16 points to Spurs, with only Mohamed Salah's goal involvements being worth more for a side in the top-flight this term (18).

In stark contrast, Wolves will be missing talismanic forward Matheus Cunha after he suffered a serious hamstring injury against Brentford.

The Brazilian has scored nine Premier League goals for Wolves this season and has been in inspired form over the winter period.

Seven of those strikes, which included a hat-trick against Chelsea earlier this month, have come in away matches.

Only two players have ever scored more on the road in a season for the club - Steven Fletcher in 2011-12 (8) and Raúl Jiménez in 2019-20 (9).

Considering Tottenham have kept just five clean sheets this term, with only TWO coming at home, Cunha's absence is a huge blow.

Alan Brazil brands Tottenham as 'thick' over key weakness of seeing out games, but Neal Maupay sent a warning after winding up players

Since their return to the Premier League in 2018, only Chelsea and Liverpool (4 each) have won more away games against Tottenham than Wolves (3).

Tottenham have lost three of their last four Premier League games against Wolves, including the last two in a row. They've never lost three consecutive league matches against them before.

Since losing 1-0 to Wolves in March 2023, Tottenham Hotspur have scored in each of their last 36 Premier League matches. In Premier League history, the only team with a longer scoring run is Arsenal between May 2001 and November 2002 (55).

Tottenham vs Wolves: Team news

Spurs are set to be handed a boost by the return of Giovani Lo Celso but the club are sweating on the fitness of Destiny Udogie.

The hosts are already without long-term absentee trio Ryan Sessegnon, Manor Solomon, and Alfie Whiteman.

Cunha's absence remains the headline news for the visitors, who were approaching a clean bill of health before his hamstring issue.

Hwang Hee-chan's availability is now a greater concern, with Wolves' top-scorer sustaining a calf issue upon his return from the Asian Cup.

Following their 2-1 win at Molineux in November, Wolves are looking to complete their first league double over Tottenham since 2009-10.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have won two of their last three away Premier League games (D1), as many as in their previous 17 combined (W2 D3 L12). They've netted eight goals in their last three on the road, having only scored 10 goals in their previous 12 away games.

Tottenham's Brennan Johnson has scored in two of his last three Premier League appearances, with both coming as a substitute. The only Spurs player to score in three sub appearances in a row was Teddy Sheringham in 1994.

Tottenham vs Wolves: What has been said?

Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario believes the current squad have the desire to do something special under Postecoglou.

"I know we've missed some trophies in the past and we have this desire to do something special under Ange," he told TNT Sports.

"I think we can learn a lot but we have to stay focused and listen to him and try to make something special for Spurs.

Vicario added: "We have to be focused on game by game and win every game we face and then at the end we can see what we can achieve.

"Now I think it's too early to say something about the end of the season. We have to try to do our best to win every game, to give respect to the opponents but not be scared to play the teams that are in better positions than us.

"Then we'll see at the end of the season because we want to do something special."

Only Liverpool (10) have won more Premier League home games this season than Tottenham (9), who have won their last five at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Spurs could reach 10 wins in as few as 13 home matches from the start of a Premier League campaign for only a third time, after 2011-12 (first 13) and 2016-17 (first 12).

Wolves have won their last two Premier League games in London, having gone 14 without a win in the capital beforehand (D3 L11). They last won three consecutive top-flight away games in London back in September 1979.

Since losing 1-0 to Wolves in March 2023, Tottenham Hotspur have scored in each of their last 36 Premier League matches. In Premier League history, the only team with a longer scoring run is Arsenal between May 2001 and November 2002 (55).
