Nike cancel Mason Greenwood sponsorship after Man Utd player's arrest and bail

Manchester United and England forward Mason Greenwood will no longer be outfitted by Nike after he was bailed on suspicion of sexual assault, rape and making threats to kill Mason Greenwood has lost his sponsorship deal with Nike

Nike have terminated their deal to outfit Mason Greenwood after the Manchester United forward was arrested and released on bail.

Greenwood, 20, was apprehended by Greater Manchester Police in late January on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman.

While in police custody, he was further arrested on charges of sexual assault and making threats to kill.

Officers were granted two extensions to question Greenwood before he was released on bail on Wednesday.

Manchester United suspended the England international following his initial arrest and Nike also put their relationship with the player on hold.

"We have suspended our relationship with Mason Greenwood," the American sportswear giants said. "We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation."

Nike have since confirmed they will no longer sponsor Greenwood with a fresh statement released on Monday.

"Mason Greenwood is no longer a Nike athlete," they told The Athletic.

The United academy graduate, who joined the club aged six, has also been removed from video games FIFA, eFootball and PES.

Elsewhere, the Red Devils contacted supporters who bought a Greenwood No. 11 shirt this season to offer them the chance to exchange it for another jersey.

"As a United Direct customer we are writing to you regarding your previous purchase of a Manchester United shirt personalised with Greenwood, given the current circumstances relating to Mason Greenwood," read the email the club sent to fans.

"We can confirm that United Direct and Adidas customers who purchased a Manchester United shirt that was personalised with Greenwood's name and number, have the opportunity to exchange it for this season's home shirt personalised with another player's name without charge."

Following Greenwood's arrest on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill, the club released a statement last Tuesday which read: "Manchester United reiterates its strong condemnation of violence of any kind.

"As previously communicated, Mason Greenwood will not train with, or play for, the club until further notice."

Nike ending their association with Greenwood comes after Cadbury, one of United's official partners, confirmed they would not use the player in their marketing campaigns.

"Cadbury does not condone violence in any form," the confectionary company said. "Our Partnership is with the Club itself and not the individual players.

"However, while these allegations are being investigated, any marketing or products we create with Manchester United will not feature this player. We will continue to monitor the situation closely."

Greenwood has not responded to the allegations against him.

United interim manager Ralf Rangnick discussed the player sparingly ahead of the FA Cup fixture against Middlesbrough last Friday.

"To be honest, I didn't speak that much with the current players about what happened," Rangnick said.

"I'm pretty sure that they did. Obviously, we had internal discussions, but I'm pretty sure everyone will understand those internal discussions should stay internal.

"It's an unusual situation for everybody and nobody would want to experience that.

"Obviously it was a topic within the team, but they're human beings and Mason was part of the group before we had our break.

"It's an ongoing process and we have to put our focus on tomorrow's game and then Tuesday's game at Burnley. This is all I can say."
