Newcastle fans rage at Moises Caicedo not getting red card for early challenge

Newcastle fans were furious after Chelsea's Moises Caicedo appeared to escape a red card early in their Carabao Cup contest.

After less than two minutes, Caicedo was shown a yellow for dragging his studs down Anthony Gordon's leg and Achilles.

Despite the match only just getting underway, Chelsea might consider themselves lucky not to be down to ten men - with VAR not in use in the Carabao Cup.

One Newcastle fan raged: "You can't live with VAR. You can't live without VAR. What a horrendous challenge by Moises Caicedo. Where's VAR when you need it?"

Another wrote: "Disgraceful challenge by Caicedo on Gordon."

And Newcastle supporters were not the only ones, with even Chelsea fans believing they got away with one.

A Chelsea fan said: "Caicedo is shown red if there is VAR tonight… Lucky there isn't. Not a clue what he's thinking there."

Any anger Newcastle fans felt were changed in the 16th minute as Callum Wilson fired them in front as he profited from some poor defending by Benoit Badiashile.

The Magpies striker just put pressure on Chelsea's backline after a poor pass while they were in attack with Thiago Silva initially missing his tackle.

The ball bobbled up for Badiashile but the Frenchman completely messed up his touch, giving Wilson the chance to simply score.

Things went from bad to worse for Mauricio Pochettino minutes later, who already looked shocked at his side's defending.

Enzo Fernandez has been forced off with an injury with Armando Broja coming on in his place.

While there is yet to be a full diagnosis, it could add to a list of injuries that already stands at 12.

Captain Reece James, Marc Cucurella, Ben Chilwell, Romeo Lavia and Robert Sanchez are among those already missing through injury.
