New footage shows reason Jose Mourinho stormed out of Roma press conference

mirror.co.uk, 27 September 2021, 15:15

Jose Mourinho walked away from his post-match press conference when it was revealed he wouldn't be able to speak to reporters directly.

The Roma boss was already not in the best of moods after watching his side lose a pulsating Derby della Capitale 3-2 to Lazio.

Mourinho had guided his new side to three four victories from their first five Serie A games, as well as a thumping victory to begin their Europa Conference League campaign.

But in their biggest game of the season so far, the Giallorossi came unstuck against their dearest rivals.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic put Lazio in front, before Mourinho's old friend Pedro doubled their lead less than ten minutes later.

Pedro scored against his former club and manager during the 3-2 win for Lazio

Pedro played under Mourinho at both Chelsea and Roma and on both occasions the pair enjoyed an acrimonious relationship.

Mourinho allowed Pedro to leave Roma in the summer, terminating his contract to facilitate his exit from the club.

Ibanez got Roma back into the game in the second half, before Felipe Anderson re-established Lazio's two-goal lead.

Jordan Veretout scored a penalty with 20 minutes to go, but Mourinho's men were unable to bag an equaliser as they lost more ground to early leaders Napoli.

Following the game, Mourinho was expected to address the written media, but was seen storming out of the press conference.

There was initially suggestions that the Portuguese had took offence at a question asked, but a video circulated by Calciomercato shows Mourinho arguing with Lazio media bosses in regards to their post-match press policies.

Since the Covid pandemic, the Biancocelesti don't allow the written press to directly ask coaches questions, instead using a press officer as an intermediary.

Jose Mourinho claimed referees ruined Roma's game with Lazio

The video shows Mourinho talking to a Serie A delegate, saying: "Lazio chose for their coach, I want to talk to the press.

However, when he was informed he wouldn't be able to, he walked out while saying: "Okay, okay, they'll talk to him."

Mourinho did fulfil his obligations to broadcaster DAZN, where he took aim at the referee and VAR ruined the game.

"Unfortunately, a fantastic game was ruined by the referee and VAR, who were not at the right level for this match," Mourinho told DAZN.

"The second goal could've been 1-1, it went to 2-0. The [lack of a] second yellow for Lucas Leiva was important too. I think my team was the best on the field today.

"We dominated, we gave Lazio huge problems, they controlled the final minutes the way they wanted to, and because the referee allowed them to do so."
