The Uruguayan striker has taken the vacant No.9 from Roberto Firmino, a number he last wore at Benfica.
Liverpool fans had already been buying their newly-released 2023/24 shirt with Nunez and the number 27 on the back, but will now be offered an exchange.
The club said: "Fans who have already purchased new 2023-24 home and away jerseys printed with the name 'Darwin' and the number '27' will be personally reimbursed by Nunez with a like-for-like exchange for a 'Darwin 9' shirt."
Nunez himself also commented on taking a number worn by legendary strikers such as Robbie Fowler, Ian Rush and Fernando Torres.
"I'm really happy to wear number nine. And I'm very proud too," he told liverpoolfc.com.
