Mourinho gives advice to Southgate as England boss makes two changes to squad

mirror.co.uk, 4 October 2021, 17:29

England boss Gareth Southgate has added Roma striker Tammy Abraham and Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell to his squad after an injury to Reece James.

Right-back James was called up to Southgate's initial squad but Blues manager Thomas Tuchel insisted he would not feature in the World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary.

The 21-year-old suffered an ankle injury during the Premier League clash with Manchester City in late September and missed subsequent matches against Juventus and Southampton.

Chilwell has replaced his Chelsea teammate in the England squad, while former Stamford Bridge colleague Abraham has also earned a first call-up since November 2020.

Tammy Abraham's fine form for Roma has earned him an England recall

Abraham left the Blues to join Roma in a £34million transfer this summer, with manager Jose Mourinho intent on signing the 24-year-old.

He has been in fine form for the Italian club, scoring four goals and contributing three assists in 10 appearances in all competitions.

This form has not gone unnoticed by Southgate and the Three Lions confirmed Abraham and Chilwell's call-ups with a brief statement released on Monday.

"Ben Chilwell and Tammy Abraham have been added to the England squad for the forthcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers," the statement reads.

"All players will report to St George's Park on Tuesday apart from Reece James, who is ruled out through injury."

England are looking to increase their advantage in World Cup qualifying Group I with a trip to Andorra on Saturday followed by Hungary's visit to Wembley on Tuesday.

The Three Lions are close to confirming their place at the Qatar competition scheduled for the winter of 2022 and Southgate clearly believes Abraham can bring a new dimension to his side's attack.

Is Tammy Abraham's return to the England set-up overdue? Have your say in the comments.

This will come as no surprise to Mourinho, who declared last month Abraham "deserves" more than his current tally of six caps.

"I am trying to create a monster of a forward for Gareth Southgate," said Mourinho of the Roma No.9.

"Unless he (Southgate) doesn't have proper eyes and still not call him up with the England national team, then I would suggest for Tammy to switch countries. He deserves more caps under his name."

Abraham drew more lavish praise from his manager after playing 90 minutes in Roma's 2-0 victory over Empoli in Serie A on Sunday.

The Portuguese said: "There are strikers who if they don't score it doesn't matter, others instead if they don't score then they make a contribution equal to zero.

"Then there are those who do not score and are the best in the field and this is Tammy. He played a terrific game."
