Milner and Henderson pinpoint Liverpool "reset" which saved title charge

Liverpool stalwarts James Milner and Jordan Henderson have both cited a January "reset" as a crucial moment in their season ahead of a Premier League title showdown on the final day

The Reds beat Southampton at St Mary's on Tuesday night to keep alive their hopes of the quadruple. Manchester City hold a one point advantage at the summit despite being held at the weekend by West Ham United. Jurgen Klopp's side have responded by beating Southampton but will need a favour from Aston Villa.

At one point City were clear at the top before Liverpool put together a sensational winning run. The Reds had games in hand at the turn of the year and have gone on to claim three points in 13 of their last 15 games. A mindset shift in the New Year has been referenced as a vital moment with the league title still a possibility.

Milner told Sky Sports : "We had a reset in January when we were so far behind and we went for it. We had a mental reset and we've really pushed. City are an incredible team to go up against. Whatever happens we've done ourselves proud. All we can do is try to win our games. It wasn't going to be easy after the weekend. Hopefully we can have two more big performances."

Henderson echoed that sentiment as he said: "It's always tough. City never drop points really. Now and again a few of us do [watch their games]. The way they play it's never nice [to see as a rival], put the kids channels on.

"We really kicked on from January and gave it everything. In January if you said it would go to the last game we'd have taken that. We were quite far off. You have to give credit to the lads."

Liverpool will host Wolves and will need club legend Steven Gerrard to masterminded a result on the blue half of Manchester. City came out on top in a final day showdown three years ago and hold a slender advantage once again as they target a fourth league success in five seasons.

Henderson added: "The aim was to take it to the end. We knew it would be difficult. A lot of changes. The lads were brilliant. They kept going right to the end and got the reward.

"We've done that really well all season, the lads who haven't played as much as they'd like took their opportunity. You need everyone in a Premier League season.
