Mikel Arteta reveals 'positive' talks with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and dismisses calls to remove Arsenal captaincy after Tottenham lateness

talksport.com, 17 March 2021, 15:33
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has drawn a line under the situation after captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang turned up late for the north London derby.

The Gunners striker was dropped from the starting XI for his tardiness and watched from the bench as his teammates came from behind to win 2-1.

It is understood this wasn't the first time Aubameyang's discipline has been scrutinised and questions were asked about his status as club captain.

However, Arteta insists the situation is over, confirming the 31-year-old will not be stripped of the armband.

When asked by talkSPORT's Ian Abrahams whether Aubameyang will remain captain, Arteta said: "We talked. Everything has been resolved in a really positive way and we move forward."

It is claimed Aubameyang, who was pictured stuck in north London traffic, skipped the warm down after the game and will receive a fine for his lateness.

West Brom striker Charlie Austin, currently on loan at Championship side QPR, has labelled Aubameyang's actions 'rude' and 'poor'.

"He's the captain, he can't be late. He's got to set an example," Austin told Tuesday's talkSPORT Breakfast.

"I think back to 2014 when Ronald Koeman took out Sadio Mane away to Norwich and put him on the bench because he was late to a team meeting.

"We all know as ex-footballers and current players you can't be late to turn up to a game, it's rude.

"Especially being club captain as well, you've got to set the example. He turned up late to a north London derby!"
