Mikel Arteta 'convinced' by Youri Tielemans as Arsenal striker search continues

mirror.co.uk, 5 June 2022, 04:20
The Gunners missed out on Champions League football for next season in heart-breaking fashion and as a result manager Mikel Arteta is planning on a big overhaul

Arsenal are looking to bounce back from the heartache they suffered at the tail-end of the season with their fifth-placed finish by securing some big-name arrivals this summer.

Mikel Arteta admitted he would need to go on his summer holiday before being able to reflect on the "pain" of being pipped to the post for Champions League qualification by nearby rivals Tottenham Hotspur. It now appears as if he plans to put that pain behind him by signing some familiar faces in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The Gunners are plotting a return to the European elite by purchasing some Premier League-proven talent to add to their exciting, young squad that contains academy graduates such as Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe.

Mirror Football has analysed three rumours that suggest Arteta is wasting precious little time in trying to right the wrong's of Arsenal's last season.

Confidence grows in Tielemans deal

Arsenal are reportedly growing increasingly confident that they can strike a deal with fellow Premier League side Leicester City over a deal for Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans.

The 25-year-old is on record as saying he wishes to play Champions League football sooner rather than later - something the Gunners obviously can't offer him currently.

Surprisingly, that does not seem to be much of a sticking point as Tielemans has been enticed by a move to the Emirates and could leave the Foxes for as little as £25million.

The relatively low transfer fee stems from the fact that the former Anderlecht midfielder has just one year left to run on his deal at the King Power. This prevents Brendan Rodgers' men from commanding a higher fee as he could walk away for nothing in 12 months time.

Gabriel Jesus agreement close

Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus has long been admired by Arteta and is wanted by Arsenal as his contract at the Etihad nears its end.

Much like Tielemans, Jesus has just a year left to run on his City contract and despite the lack of Champions League football at the Emirates next year is still keen on linking up with Arteta once again.

The pair are familiar with each other from the Arsenal boss' time at City as an assistant to Pep Guardiola. Jesus is currently away on international duty with Brazil and appeared to offer a timeline on an update over his future after their win over South Korea.

"I'm looking to see what's best for me and above all, for my career. From Tuesday, we'll see what is the best."

The Sun claim that Arsenal's technical director and fellow Brazilian Edu feel that their offer of £40million will be enough to tempt City's hand and sanction the sale.

Gunners bid for Scamacca snubbed

Arteta's side have had their opening bid for Sassuolo and Italy striker Gianluca Scamacca rejected according to reports.

Arsenal are in desperate need for a striker given Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's departure in January has since been followed by Alexandre Lacazette's departure earlier this week.

Scamacca has emerged as one of the brightest stars of Serie A, netting 16 goals in the league alone last term for Sassuolo. At just 23 years of age, there is also plenty of time for him to continue his development at the Emirates if Arsenal eventually get their man.

Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport claim that Arsenal saw an offer of £35m rejected by the Serie A side. The report claims that Sassuolo are firm in their £45m valuation of the striker and will not budge from that figure.
