Mbappe and Messi vs Madrid, Chelsea draw Lille again but Liverpool get tougher tie

Liverpool got Inter Milan instead of RB Salzburg, Manchester United drew Atletico Madrid rather than Paris Saint-Germain, while Manchester City will face Sporting Lisbon and not Villarreal after the first draw had to be declared void.

In the pick of the new ties, Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos and Kylian Mbappe will go to the Bernabeu when Real Madrid face PSG, offering some consolation after the Argentine had originally been pitted against Cristiano Ronaldo.

The result of the first draw had to be scrapped after a mix-up involving Manchester United and Liverpool.

Controversy began when United were drawn against Villarreal, a tie which wasn't possible because the two sides qualified from the same group.

Amid confusion over why the Red Devils were put in the pot to face the Spanish club, Manchester City were subsequently pulled out instead.

It then emerged that United were not placed the pot for a potential tie with Atletico Madrid, who ended up drawing Bayern Munich.

It also became clear Liverpool were mistakenly put in the pot for that tie instead.

The debacle led to an apology from UEFA, who blamed the problems on "the software of an external service provider" which had given officials the wrong information on which clubs were eligible to face one another based on seedings, previous meetings and nationality.

After getting favourable ties, a redraw felt disappointing for Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City.

The Blues, however, somehow managed to avoid Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Ajax once again to get Lille, who appeared to be the most desirable option despite being champions of France.

City and United will not complain, as the quality of their opponents arguably remained similar, but Liverpool appear to be the biggest victims of the redraw.

They saw RB Salzburg, the Austrian minnows, replaced with Serie A champions Inter Milan.

While there will be no Messi vs Ronaldo, the return of the Argenine to the Bernabeu provides an interesting enough narrative.

Perhaps even more intriguing is that Mbappe will face Madrid, who are expected to sign the France superstar on a free transfer next summer.
