Mason Greenwood latest: Man United yet to comment as forward has police charges dropped

The 21-year-old has had all charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive control against him dropped.

He was arrested in late January 2022 when images and videos were posted on social media, while he was also questioned on suspicion of making threats to kill.

Greenwood, who is under contract at United until 2025, was subsequently suspended from playing or training by the Premier League club.

The last of his 129 appearances for the club came in a 1-0 win over West Ham on January 22, 2022.

Greenwood had his bail - which originally was set to expire in April - extended until mid-June 2022.

He was later charged with a provisional trial date set for November 2023.

However, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges against him on Thursday.

Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, Greater Manchester Police's Head of Public Protection, said: "Given the significant media coverage of this case, it is only fair that we share the news that the 21-year-old man, who had been arrested and charged in connection with an investigation opened in January 2022, no longer faces criminal proceedings in relation to this.

"The investigation team has remained in regular contact with the legal team, providing any updates of note, and so understand the rationale for the discontinuation of proceedings at this stage, and that this decision has not been taken lightly.

"Despite the media and public's interest in this case, we have decided not to comment on it in any further detail.

"I would, however, like to use this opportunity to reiterate GMP's commitment to investigating allegations of violence against women and girls and supporting those affected, regardless of their circumstances, throughout what can be a hard and upsetting time for them.

"An ever increasing number of officers are receiving specialist training and the force is more consistently utilising tools, available via the criminal justice system, to keep people safe and care for victims.

"If you feel you are or might be a victim, please don't let this case put you off asking for help."

United suspended Greenwood following the allegations, while he was also removed from FIFA 22 and Nike terminated his sponsorship deal.

His current status now that charges have been dropped are yet to be revealed.

In April 2022, United were forced to deny claims Greenwood would be returning due to his profile being visible on their website.

"There has been no change whatsoever in Mason's status," the club said.

"We removed his profile from the club app soon after he was removed from the squad in January.

"This was in order to remove Mason from interactive elements of the app, such as team predictions etc.

"However, his profile was never removed from the website as he remains a Manchester United player, albeit not currently part of the squad while the legal process unfolds."

Greenwood came through the Man United academy and has scored 35 goals in 129 games since making his debut in 2019.
