The rival clubs have decided to play an Old Firm derby as part of a four-team mini-tournament in November with Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers, and fans aren't happy.
Supporters of both unfurled banners at their home games following the news, with the Hoops faithful's reading 'Shove your 'Old Firm' friendly up your a***', and the Gers' saying 'Money over morals, no derby friendlies'.
However, despite the backlash on the decision, the boards of both clubs look set to press on, with Rangers commercial director James Bisgrove stating the financial benefit of the Australian tournament would be 'unparalleled'.
This suspected huge sum of money produced by the trip was cited by talkSPORT's Martin Keown, and the Arsenal Invincible stated he believed that should the two Glasgow clubs go ahead with the tournament, they should give half the funds to the rest of Scottish football.
"It's all about money isn't it," Keown said on Friday's White and Jordan show, "And survival, and finding ways, clever ways for them [Scottish teams] to be able to compete on the European stage."
"Of course, they will have a Champions League team now as we talked about earlier, but nevertheless if they're going to attract top players they have to have the revenue sources and it simply isn't there."
He continued: "If they do a game like that, with the two sort of giants of the league, Celtic Rangers, goes to Australia, then maybe half of that money should be shared with the rest of Scottish football, or certainly the Premier League in that country.
"Because how do they [other teams] compete otherwise? They've already got this disparity which will come in with the Champions League money, and I know some of that's distributed. I think it's only about £300k to £400k, which is something for the teams that are lower down in the Scottish Premier League.
"But this distribution of wealth should be shared among the other clubs."
Keown concluded: "They're going to be twice as wealthy by that one game. That makes them twice as more powerful than the rest of the Scottish Premier League."
