Manchester United expiring contracts: Who is free to leave this summer and next?

sportsmole.co.uk, 1 June 2024, 17:43
Manchester United have entered a new era under the leadership of new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who has taken control of the football department at Old Trafford.

The futures of a number of first-team players are currently unclear, with big changes planned, as the club attempt to return to former glories.

Here, Sports Mole takes a look at the Man United players whose contracts either expire at the end of June, or in the summer of 2025.

Which Man United players are out of contract this summer?

UEFA Nations League (1): 2020-21

Varane's exit from Man United this summer has already been confirmed, with the ex-France international leaving the club when his contract expires at the end of June.

The centre-back returned from injury to help the Red Devils win the 2023-24 FA Cup final, but ongoing fitness problems led to the club making the decision to not renew his deal.

Anthony Martial

Age: 28

Position: Forward

Transfer value: £8.5m

Joining fee: £36m

Man United appearances: 317

UEFA Europa League (1): 2016-17

UEFA Nations League (1): 2020-21

Martial's time with Man United will officially come to an end on June 30, with the club deciding not to hand him a new contract.

The Frenchman has been unable to fulfil his early potential at Old Trafford, and like Varane, he has struggled with fitness problems; the forward will depart with 90 Man United goals to his name.

Brandon Williams

Age: 23

Position: Left-back

Transfer value: £2.1m

Joined: Academy graduate

Joining fee: N/A

Man United appearances: 51

Williams spent the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Ipswich Town, making 17 appearances for the Championship outfit, with 15 of those appearances coming in the second tier of English football.

The 23-year-old was not involved in the second half of the season, though, and it appears likely that he will be leaving Man United on a free transfer this summer after 51 first-team appearances.

Jonny Evans

Age: 36

Position: Centre-back

Transfer value: £1.7m

Joined: September 1, 2023

Joining fee: Free transfer

Man United appearances: 228

Community Shield (4): 2008, 2010, 2011, 2013

UEFA Champions League (1): 2007-08

FIFA Club World Cup (1): 2008

Evans returned to Old Trafford on a free transfer last summer after impressing during pre-season, and he made 30 appearances for the Red Devils during the 2023-24 campaign.

The 36-year-old was initially signed as cover but proved to be an important player due to the team's injury problems, and a new deal for the Northern Ireland international cannot be ruled out.

Tom Heaton

Age: 38

Position: Goalkeeper

Transfer value: £213k

Joined: July 2, 2021

Joining fee: Free transfer

Man United appearances: 3

Man United goals: 0

Championship (1): 2015-16

EFL Cup (1): 2022-23

Heaton returned to Man United on a free transfer in July 2021, 11 years after first leaving Old Trafford.

The experienced goalkeeper has been the number three behind Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir this season, failing to make a single appearance, and it remains to be seen whether he is kept on, with a coaching role thought to be a possibility moving forward.

Omari Forson

Age: 19

Position: Right winger

Transfer value: £850k

Joined: January 14, 2019

Joining fee: Undisclosed

Man United appearances: 7

Man United goals: 0

Honours

FA Cup (1): 2023-24

Forson made seven first-team appearances for Man United during the 2023-24 campaign, including four outings in the Premier League, but there is huge uncertainty surrounding his future at Old Trafford.

Man United have not managed to come to an agreement with the 19-year-old over a new deal, and it remains to be seen whether he is still with the club beyond June 30.

Which Man United players are out of contract next summer?

Scott McTominay

Age: 27

Position: Central midfielder

Transfer value: £27.3m

Joined: Academy graduate

Joining fee: N/A

Man United appearances: 252

Man United goals: 29

Honours

FA Cup (1): 2023-24

EFL Cup (1): 2022-23

McTominay was linked with a move away from Man United in the summer of 2023, but he ultimately remained at Old Trafford and was an important player for the club during the 2023-24 campaign.

The Scotland international scored 10 times and registered three assists in 43 appearances for the Red Devils last term, and he could now be handed a new contract, although his current deal includes the option of a 12-month extension.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Age: 26

Position: Right-back

Transfer value: £17m

Joined: July 1, 2019

Joining fee: £50m

Man United appearances: 190

Man United goals: 2

Honours

FA Cup (1): 2023-24

EFL Cup (1): 2022-23

Wan-Bissaka made 30 appearances for Man United during the 2023-24 campaign, with the defender benefitting from the team's injury problems.

The 26-year-old is being linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer, though, and it is thought that he could return to Crystal Palace during the upcoming market.

Harry Maguire

Age: 31

Position: Centre-back

Transfer value: £15.3m

Joined: August 5, 2019

Joining fee: £80m

Man United appearances: 206

Man United goals: 11

Honours

EFL Cup (1): 2022-23

Maguire was thought to be surplus to requirements at Old Trafford last summer, but he managed to win back the trust of head coach Erik ten Hag during the 2023-24 campaign.

The centre-back is unlikely to leave the Red Devils this summer unless a large offer arrives, and the 31-year-old could even potentially be offered a contract extension by the club, although his current deal has a clause which can be activated to take him until June 2026.

Amad Diallo

Age: 21

Position: Right winger

Transfer value: £15.3m

Joined: January 2, 2021

Joining fee: £37m

Man United appearances: 21

Man United goals: 3

Honours

FA Cup (1): 2023-24

Scottish Cup (1): 2021-22

Diallo ended the 2023-24 campaign with 12 appearances to his name, scoring twice and providing one assist, with the 21-year-old showing his potential late in the season.

The Ivorian is expected to be a part of the first-team squad at Old Trafford for next term, and his contract also includes a clause which can be activated to take him until June 2026.

Victor Lindelof

Age: 29

Position: Centre-back

Transfer value: £12.8m

Joined: July 1, 2017

Joining fee: £31m

Supertaca Candido de Oliveira (1): 2016

FA Cup (1): 2023-24

EFL Cup (1): 2022-23

UEFA European Under-21 Championship (1): 2015

Lindelof was restricted to just 28 appearances during the 2023-24 campaign due to injury, and the Sweden international is facing an uncertain future at the club.

The 29-year-old has made 259 appearances for the Red Devils since his arrival, but it is believed that the club are willing to listen to offers for him in the upcoming market.

Christian Eriksen

Age: 32

Position: Central midfielder

Transfer value: £6.8m

Joined: July 15, 2022

Joining fee: Free transfer

Man United appearances: 72

Man United goals: 3

Johan Cruyff Shield (1): 2013

Serie A (1): 2020-21

FA Cup (1): 2023-24

EFL Cup (1): 2022-23

Eriksen has proven to be a dependable performer for Man United since his arrival on a free transfer from Brentford, but he lost his starting role in midfield during the 2023-24 campaign.

The Denmark international is currently being linked with a move away from Old Trafford, and it is believed that he is keen to seek a transfer in order to secure regular football at this stage of his career.

Willy Kambwala

Age: 19

Position: Centre-back

Transfer value: £4.2m

Joined: October 5, 2020

Joining fee: Undisclosed

Man United appearances: 10

Man United goals: 0

Kambwala benefitted from injury problems to make 10 appearances for Man United during the 2023-24 campaign, with eight of those outings coming in the Premier League.

The 19-year-old is out of contract in the summer of 2025, but he is allegedly set to be offered a new deal, having impressed in his limited first-team action.
