Man Utd would face different problems with Rodgers, Pochettino and Ten Hag

mirror.co.uk, 8 November 2021, 12:10
Manchester United will find it hard to persuade Brendan Rodgers, Mauricio Pochettino or Erik ten Hag to come to Old Trafford as a replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer right now

Pressure continues to mount on Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following his team's 2-0 home defeat to Manchester City on Saturday.

The Red Devils have taken just four points from their last six Premier League games and don't seem capable of challenging for the title under the Norwegian.

Solskjaer is reportedly on the verge of a "dressing room revolt" with key starts Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo said to be unhappy with their position.

And if the manager loses the dressing room, it's only a matter of time before they lose their job.

But finding a replacement to deploy United's traditional, attacking style of play won't be easy. Especially in the middle of the season.

Should Manchester United sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer? Let us know in the comments below!

Perhaps the most obvious target is Mauricio Pochettino. Legendary United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is a long-term admirer of the Argentine and he boasts a fine reputation.

During his time at Tottenham, Pochettino guided Spurs from Europa League obscurity to the Champions League final - all while deploying an entertaining, expansive, high-pressing style of play.

Speaking in April 2016, Ferguson told reporters: "Well the manager [Pochettino] has been fantastic. They [Spurs] have a bad record of managers, there is no doubt about that. They have had so many over the years, but this lad has composure.

"You never see him ruffled and the way his team play is a testimony to the work he is doing... He understands the advantage of playing young people. They won't let you down and they have been fantastic."

The problem with appointing Pochettino, though, is he recently signed a contract extension at current side Paris Saint-Germain.

And why would he want to leave the Ligue 1 outfit right now? Yes there are difficulties when coaching superstars like Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, but PSG look set to hand him a first league title as a manager - something missing from his CV.

The French giants are also Champions League contenders once more this season.

There could be the temptation for Pochettino to move to Manchester in the summer if he fails to deliver in the French capital or finds that his enjoyment for coaching begins to wane while in situ at the Parc des Princes; something which happened to his predecessor, Thomas Tuchel, who lamented he felt more like "a sports politician or sports minister than a coach".

Of course, that wouldn't solve United's problems in the here and now.

One manager who does have a history of changing clubs mid-season is Brendan Rodgers, who left Celtic to join current side Leicester in February 2019.

The Red Devils, however, will struggle to lure him from the King Power at present, it appears. When asked about the United job last month, Rodgers said: "I don't even think about it - and that's the brutal honesty.

"I'm sure the supporters are probably tired of it. At Leicester, there is always a link. My focus is always here with Leicester and developing the football club on to that next level."

There's also the Liverpool problem. Rodgers was their manager between 2012 and 2015 and did a fine job for the most part, taking to them to within 90 minutes of the Premier League title.

Crossing the United-Liverpool divide could be difficult for the Leicester boss, who guided the Foxes to FA Cup success last term.

Another highly-rated candidate whom persuading to join could be problematic is Erik ten Hag, who's impressed a lot of people in European football since his appointment at Ajax in December 2017.

The Dutchman has guided the Amsterdam outfit to two Eredivisie titles, two Dutch Cups and the semi-finals of the Champions League.

At present, they have cruised through their Champions League group - maximum points from four games - and are playing some of the smartest stuff on the continent.

Ten Hag has been linked with recent vacant roles at Newcastle, Tottenham and Barcelona and it seems a matter of time before he jumps to one of Europe's top leagues in the near future.

Who will be the best player in the world in 2025? Have your say!

But he's not interested in leaving Ajax mid-season. He reportedly turned down the Bayern Munich job in 2019 and recently expressed his desire to stay in Amsterdam.

Ten Hag told reporters in October: "When I extended my contract with Ajax, I said, 'I think we have a team that we can develop.'

"We want to annoy the European top teams. We're on our way, let me put it this way."

United increasingly appear to need a new manager. But even if they do sack Solskjaer, whether they can get one of the world's elite to replace him is very much in question.
