The former goalkeeper was on holiday on the Croatian island of Hvar when he is reported to have fallen ill at a restaurant.
He has since been transported to the nearby coastal town of Split on the mainland, where he has been described as being in 'a stable position'.
Dutch club Ajax, where he recently resigned as their director, confirmed the news on Twitter this evening.
A statement on Ajax's social media accounts said: "On Friday, Edwin van der Sar has had a bleeding around his brain.
"He's currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition.
